Watched this with the wife. Gut-wrenching, but we liked it.
Ever since we watched this, my wife gets worried every time she sees a shed on someone's property. She wants to go knock on the door.

Sonita - Documentary following an Afghan refugee living in Iran (paperless) who aspires to finish school and become a rapper. Her family wants to bring her back to Afghanistan and sell her into marriage to finance her brother's own marriage. Best documentary I've seen in a long time. Sonita is plenty interesting on her own, but the movie gets into additional issues when the documentarian and her crew wrestle with whether they should intervene. Definitely worth seeing.

I did a poor job of summarizing the programs. As for the penal system, the Norwegians said they're following our Eighth Amendment, and think that the death penalty qualifies as cruel and unusual (yes, I'm aware the Supreme Court has disagreed). The clips showing life in a Norwegian prison are pretty amazing, with one guy mountain biking and others having a great time, while bemoaning their loss of freedom and contact with friends and relatives. Moore says the U.S. recidivism rate is around 80%; in Norway it's now 20%.

And outlawing private schools wasn't the point of the Finnish school system segment, although it was mentioned and I thought it interesting. The primary point was that they don't use standardized tests and homework is very minimal. Yet once they adopted a freer, more creative approach, student performance soared.

And yeah, I remain skeptical about the ability of a heterogeneous society to incorporate some of the ideas presented but, again, I enjoyed being pleasantly prodded into thinking about them.

One final comment, and then I hope we'll push this discussion over into the Water Cooler and let this thread focus on movies... Were it possible, I'd sponsor a CS fireside consisting of a fine meal prepared by our resident smokers, followed by a view of the the movie in question and a discussion. It'd be a very fun and interesting evening.

That sounds fascinating. Finland is unique in its educational approach and many other successful countries do use exactly what Finland does not.

Did anybody watch MaidenTrip about the Dutch girl Dekker who circumnavigated the world in two years at ages 14-16, becoming the youngest person ever to accomplish this amazing feat? She apparently did not like the film because the director didn't use enough of her own film while sailing. I found it intriguing.

Whiskey Tango Foxtrot. Due to so-so reviews (60% on Rotten Tomatoes, a 7.0 on IMDB) and a mediocre trailer, I went in with low expectations and was pleasantly surprised. It's loosely based on the experiences of a female reporter sent to Afghanistan shortly after the Iraq War got into full swing. Tina Fey, Margot Robbie, Alfred Molina and Billy Bob Thornton, among others, turn in entertaining performances, and although it was mostly filmed in New Mexico, the movie does a great job of creating what looks like Kabul, Kandahar, etc. Rated R for language (there's apparently a fair amount of profanity in war zones), but Mrs. PAC was okay with it.

I saw it. I didn't love it. It wasn't terrible; it just wasn't very good. At one point in the movie, Tina Fey asks her boyfriend, "How does this end?" I sort of felt the same way about the movie.
