ted of course would know this subject matter. Great summary by Ted."Guitar groups are on their way out, Mr Epstein."
Upon rejecting the Beatles, Dick Rowe told Brian Epstein of the January 1, 1962 audition for Decca, which signed Brian Poole and the Tremeloes instead.

I wasn't bothered by the weather report thing from a historical accuracy perspective. I was bothered in the way the movie's plot came to a climax in something that most in the theater probably realized 45 minutes earlier in the movie.Originally posted by TripletDaddy View PostWell, I guess you can start with the fact that Turing wasnt the first to break Enigma, he wasn't the first to build a machine (bombe) to help crack cyphered Enigma messages, he didn't make one bombe nor were his machines named Christopher, and he didn't make or design his versions of the bombe by himself. There were lots of other inaccuracies beyond these and you could argue that each of them was quite significant.
Nevertheless, he was the first to design something on such a massive scale. His contributions to the war effort are without question but the movie took a load of license to tell the story. Which is why being bothered by the weather report issue is trivial. I suppose if you are entirely unfamiliar with the history of Turing and only know what is presented in the movie, the weather report stuff could be bothersome.
despite the creative license, I still really enjoyed the movie and would recommend it to anyone."Discipleship is not a spectator sport. We cannot expect to experience the blessing of faith by standing inactive on the sidelines any more than we can experience the benefits of health by sitting on a sofa watching sporting events on television and giving advice to the athletes. And yet for some, “spectator discipleship” is a preferred if not primary way of worshipping." -Pres. Uchtdorf

Yes, I should have said I have never heard of a soviet spy in "Hut 6". Given there was nearly 9000 people working on this effort around the end of the war one can expect there would be a spy or two.Originally posted by UVACoug View PostI read that there was a Soviet Spy at Bletchley Park, but he was in a different section that had no contact with Turing's crew and that there was almost no chance that he new anything about the Enigma effort.
I found the movie to be very entertaining as well even though most of the movie focused on Turing's war efforts and not his other work including his "Imitation Game" (aka. the "Turing Test").Originally posted by UVACoug View PostI'm not particularly bothered by any of the inaccuracies. Everything was a bit too vague to actually learn anything about what really happened, and the movie made me want to learn more about the man. I found it very entertaining, and like I said earlier, I was devastated at the end (although I have also read that they took a lot of liberties with the sexuality aspects of the film and there is evidence that his death was an accident that had nothing to do with his "treatment").
The dramatic license seemed to be executed much better than it has been in other films, such as say ... Argo. That movie was absurd. I have no idea how it won an Oscar.Last edited by Uncle Ted; 01-01-2015, 11:20 AM."If there is one thing I am, it's always right." -Ted Nugent.

The weather report was actually historically accurate. If I recall correctly there was some poor german stationed in Northern Norway (or some area like that) that had the job of reporting the weather every morning. Fortunately for the English and their Allies the german was using the German Navy version of the enigma and the weather was always about the same every day.Originally posted by Moliere View PostI wasn't bothered by the weather report thing from a historical accuracy perspective. I was bothered by what a big deal the movie made out of it...
Spoiler for decriptions of some details of the pub scene:(1) The women intercepting these encrypted weather reports felt somewhat connected to the german man?? How? The messages were encrypted and sent via morse code. I am not sure how she even knew it was a man sending the messages.
(2) Turing had the "Eureka Moment" that he could use the known plaintext to simplify the key search. While that was very helpful it doesn't significantly reduce the key space that has to be searched.
Of course, I can see how it made the movie more entertaining for a more general audience."If there is one thing I am, it's always right." -Ted Nugent.

Regrettably, I saw the "The Gambler," which is possibly Mark Wahlberg's worst film to date. The lead characterless protagonist is colorless, vacuous and utterly without redeeming characteristics. The villains are the good guys, but other than John Goodman, without much sense. I utterly loathed this film, and cannot recommend strongly enough against seeing it, even on Netflix.Last edited by Topper; 01-02-2015, 09:31 AM."Guitar groups are on their way out, Mr Epstein."

I was so negative about the film that I put in one too many negations. I hated the film.Originally posted by Donuthole View PostSo we should see it, then?

Watched The Drop and liked it. Tom Hardy is a very good actor and it was nice (but kind of sad) to see James Gandolfini one more time. Such a great actor. It is a mob movie, but not your typical mob movie. More of a character study. Kind of a surprising ending, so avoid spoilers.
Watched Gone Girl, but the wife and I had already read the book so the thrill of the plot twists didn't work for us. The book was great.
Saw Big Hero 6 yesterday. It was fun. Incredible animation."There is no creature more arrogant than a self-righteous libertarian on the web, am I right? Those folks are just intolerable."

We saw Big Hero 6 over the weekend, and it became one of my favorite Disney movies. The animation was great, the story ideas were cool, and how could you not like Beymax?Originally posted by Jeff Lebowski View PostWatched The Drop and liked it. I watched When The Game Stands Tall over the weekend. The only reason I wanted to see it was due to my high school being part of the streak. The movie itself was pretty average but a lot of the things they talked about were very nostalgic for me. I liked how most of the characters were real they talked about Terrence Kelly who was an Oregon commit that was shot and killed in Richmond also about his teammate and best friend Cam Colvin who did end up going to Oregon. I was disappointed they didn't mention my boy Jackie Bates who I grew up with in Benicia. He joined Colvin, Willie Glasper and TJ Ward at Oregon.
They did Hollywood up the movie a bit, for example those from the Bay Area know that De La Salle would never lose to Clayton Valley. Come on now....*Banned*

On FB, an old mission buddy of mine posted that BH6 is "the best Disney animated film of all time... even better than The Incredibles."
