Live action, animated AND documentary?

No just the live action- it was its own showing at the local indie theatre. They have the set of animation as another showing, which I still need to take in. I would love to see the docs, too, but I don't know where I could do that.

I saw Amour tonight and it's nothing like any other film currently out there or in recent memory. It's slow moving, boring at times and depressing, and yet it's an excellent film. In an era when the jerky handheld camera, quick cuts, frenetic soundtrack, etc. are overused tricks to keep our attention, this movie is filmed in three rooms of a modest Parisian apartment, and the camera often remains fixed on one shot for very long periods, making the movie very contemplative. Riva certainly deserves her Oscar nomination, and Tritnignant should have received one as well.

I've witnessed real life scenes exactly like some from the film as my father cared for my mother after her stroke. It was both magnificent and heartbreaking to relive those scenes.

This is the kind of movie I'd like to discuss, but that'll have to wait until other friends, either online or nearby, have seen it. For now, two things stand out. First, we spend so much of our time hoping we live to be old, but watching this movie gave me strong reasons to hope that I don't. Second, the film gave me even more reasons, like I needed more, to be so grateful for my wife and to express more gratitude for what we have now.

This description reminded me of Russian Ark. It was filmed in the Hermitage in a single shot moving through the palace. IIRC it was an hour and a half long. For the reasons you described above, that method of filming was unique and helped the viewer concentrate on the movie.

Russian Ark is an amazing movie. Very surreal.

Saw Side Effects last weekend and thought it was entertaining. Several references to Hitchcock, both in the some of the shots and the structure of the story. I thought the final act let the movie down a little, and I also got a good chuckle out of CJ's "classier version of Wild Things" because it really did feel like that there at the end.

Did a little mini-marathon- watched Zero Dark Thirty, Django, Silver Lining Playbook. I'd already seen Django, but was really impressed with Zero Dark Thirty. I also really loved Silver Lining Playbook... probably because it's more or less just a better conceived version of Garden State, which I love.

I did this last week. I was stuck in Reno and my flight home got cancelled. I watched Identity Thief, SLP, and Argo for a second time. I was pretty meh on both Identity Thief and SLP, and had already seen Argo, so I had some serious viewer's remorse, and regretted not renting some clubs and golfing in the cold.

It does get kind of crapped on but it's better than people give it credit for. I recently rewatched the original though and it's pretty fascinating to compare the two.

I watched "Good Will Hunting" for the first time last night with some co-workers. We started a "movie club". Last week we kicked off the club with "Blue Velvet". Sounds like it's Kurosawa next week.

Headhunters (Hodejegerne)


A subtitled Norwegian suspense film that's getting great reviews. Really cool movie with twists and turns. I went into it not knowing anything about it and it was a pretty fun ride. Reminded me a bit of Thin Ice- that Greg Kinnear suspense movie from last year. It's a pretty hard R though (for a couple brief graphic sexual depictions and a few seconds of pretty gross gore), so beware.


There's a familiar face here as old Jaime Lannister makes an appearance in a supporting role acting in his native tongue, which was pretty cool.

We streamed this from Netflix this evening and had a fun time, although Mrs. PAC and my sis had to look away a time or two. A couple of scenes evoked howls even from me. I've never seen a toilet paper tube used so creatively (or disgustingly).

One needs to suspend disbelief a time or two, but it was entertaining throughout. Subject to Commando's caveats, we recommend it.
