Chick flick with a 6.2 IMDB rating. What did you expect?

But way to take one for the team. I hope it paid off for you.

Saw the same movie last night. At this point i am kind of numb to the plot twists of Nicolas Sparks movies. I've probably seen every one made since The Notebook. The plot twist on this movie was done like every other plot in his movies... to elicit crying and emotional release. Its like heroin for my wife.

        That was the plan.

          • I had 4 opportunities to sneak preview Safe Haven. Turned them all down. Wonder why they were trying so hard to get some word-of-mouth going. Or maybe I fit into their target demographics.

Bruiserstone introduce yourself in Ellis Island (search for Pelligrino's template or he'll get sad), despite being from the worst city you are from the greatest state!

The film is about how he was tracked down decades later by some south African journalists and how his life turned out, how he was ripped off by the music industry and how he is still beloved in south Africa. It was a FANTASTIC film of a truly remarkable story about a remarkable man. I strongly recommend it. I note that it has a 95% positive review rate at Rotten Tomatoes. It is a well deserved rating. If you can you should check this out.

We finally saw this (on demand from DirecTV) and really enjoyed it. The music's very good, a mix of Dylan, Feliciano, James Taylor and Don McLean. I wasn't too impressed during the first half of the movie, but it proves to be a nice set-up for what follows, and the final 30 minutes are great. The guy seems very grounded and accepting of circumstances that would have left a lesser person rather embittered.

I see he's got an April concert in SF, but not surprisingly it's sold out.

Yeah, so do I. But it's weird, like MG said, I keep trying to get other people to watch it.

I'm still trying to get caught up on Oscar stuff so I watched a couple of the Oscar-nominated Documentary Shorts the other day. One was called Redemption and was about the entire culture of people in New York City who earn what little money they can by redeeming bottles and cans for 5 cents each. It was fascinating to see all these people from different walks of life who, for whatever reason, have taken to "redemption" for their means of income.

The other short was called Open Heart and was about this hospital in Sudan that does free heart surgery for kids all over Africa who are suffering from rheumatic heart disorders (usually resulting from the after-effects of strep earlier in childhood.) It follows this group of 8 kids from Rwanda, some as young as 3, who leave their families to go get this risky, potentially life-saving procedure. Yeah, I cried.

Finally, the wife and I watched Best Doc nominee How to Survive a Plague on Netflix instant. It's about the formation of the AIDS-fighting activist group ACT UP in the 80s and all the amazing work they did spreading awareness of the disease and how their efforts directly led to some of the great advances in fighting that disease. Powerful stuff and full of fascinating individual stories.
Kids in general these days seem more socially retarded...

None of them date. They hang out. They text. They sit in the same car or room and don't say a word...they text. Then, they go home and whack off to internet porn.

I think that's the sad truth about why these kids are retards.

Don't remember the name, but I saw a trailer for the film from the director of Old Boy.

I believe that would be Stoker, which premiered at Sundance a few weeks ago. I'm looking forward to that one.

We caught up with another Best Documentary nominee on Netflix last night called 5 Broken Cameras. Pretty interesting first person account of a Palestinian guy who has filmed the past five years of his village's protest against the Israeli settlers encroaching on their land. Really interesting stuff but hard to watch at times.

                          • I saw all the nominees for best short film. I was impressed. It's a bit different from seeing short films at Sundance where you don't know if it's going to be dumb or insane or whatever.

                              • I saw Amour tonight and it's nothing like any other film currently out there or in recent memory. It's slow moving, boring at times and depressing, and yet it's an excellent film. In an era when the jerky handheld camera, quick cuts, frenetic soundtrack, etc. are overused tricks to keep our attention, this movie is filmed in three rooms of a modest Parisian apartment, and the camera often remains fixed on one shot for very long periods, making the movie very contemplative. Riva certainly deserves her Oscar nomination, and Tritnignant should have received one as well.

I've witnessed real life scenes exactly like some from the film as my father cared for my mother after her stroke. It was both magnificent and heartbreaking to relive those scenes.

This is the kind of movie I'd like to discuss, but that'll have to wait until other friends, either online or nearby, have seen it. For now, two things stand out. First, we spend so much of our time hoping we live to be old, but watching this movie gave me strong reasons to hope that I don't. Second, the film gave me even more reasons, like I needed more, to be so grateful for my wife and to express more gratitude for what we have now.
