I watched Blackfish over the weekend. Blew me away. As you all know, I am anything but a treehugger but I can't imagine ever going to Sea World again. Those "trainers" working with the orcas? They are not marine biologists. No self-respecting marine biologist would take that job. Not only do they turn the whales into circus freaks, but they blatantly lie when they present information about the whales. "Our whales live longer and healthier lives than they do in the wild." Bullshit. They live 20-30 year in captivity and they live 80-100 years in the wild. "Most whales' dorsal fins droop in the wild when they get older." Bullshit. Happens in less than 1% of the cases in the wild. Etc.

The worst thing is how they have lied and covered up information about the attacks over the years. Those trainers should never have been in the water. There is a whale at Orlando that has killed three people over the years. But the show must go on!

A Ryan Gosling vehicle set in Bangkok. Kind of a useless, violent movie.

Yeah these trainers were more or less actors who received on the job training. That was kind of surprising and a revelation. I assumed they all had some marine biology background at minimum. They shouldn't be allowed to do the shows anymore. I feel similarly about anyone who performs these kinds of animal shows.

Whereas the critics scoff at the real Atonement, infinite and eternal.
I think you're a little too harsh on Briony Tallis (the character who narrates Atonement) and I seem to have interpreted the theme(s) of Atonement differently. In Briony's case, I feel she did everything she could to gain redemption for her actions as a 13-year-old girl. She could not do much in the way of restitution since by the time the consequences of her actions became clear to her as an adult, the main characters were dead. So she did what she could by serving humanity as a nurse and writing about and giving memory to the deceased people her actions as a young girl had harmed. I don't interpret her actions as saving her self perception but rather giving memory to what fate had denied the main characters. She did all she could to redeam herself; real salvation can only be granted by our Savior (as you well know). Besides, in an alternate universe that perhaps only Clackamascoug fully understands, Robbie doesn't die at Dunkirk and Cecilia doesn't die in the London tubes during the Blitz - they live happily ever after like in the book/film until the postscript.

As you all know, I am EVERYthing that treehuggers aspire to be. I actually get paid to hug trees, much to our engineer's chagrin. As a fish biologist, I can assure you that the whole premise of Blackfish is completely bunk because orcas aren't even fish. I don't want to blow your mind but they're actually mammals!

Seriously though, we made our six and four year olds watch Blackfish, not so much to teach them the concept of inhumanity as much as trying to eliminate any future pleadings to take them to Sea World. My six year old daughter would oscillate from crying during the scenes from capturing the young and separating them from their mothers to excitedly asking, "when can we go there?" after any clip of them jumping and splashing the crowd. Very effective parenting.

My biggest problem with Blackfish was all the jilted trainers who lined up to talk about how immoral Sea World was/is due to these practices. I can understand feelings of compromise and conflict from these trainers fresh out of university with their new "marine biology" degrees (despite being a fish biologist, I've never met a "marine biologist" in my field) and landing their dream job working hand in hand with these amazing animals only to realize that life inside Disney(animal)land isn't all flowers and sausages. But some of these trainers were there for like 10+ years and never made much of a stink.

It seems as though Sea World's strategy has been to get kids right out of college and then over time, used the more senior trainers to persuade the new, naive employees to forget what they've been taught all those years i.e. life expectancy, fin droop, pod dynamics and family behavior, teeth raking...

It's a sad story, but shouldn't have been a surprise to anyone. Generally speaking, captivity in any form has significant impacts on an individual's health. Is Sea World any worse than the San Diego Zoo? Having friends that have worked in large aquariums, including Shark Reef at Mandalay Bay, turnover of fish is incredibly high. Mortality is the cost of doing business. Some institutions are more effective than others, but there's only show much you can do while still providing a product that the public can see and interact with.

It's just a little interesting how our disapproval increases with size and phylogenetic relationship.

Yeah, but they seemed pretty embarrassed about it now.

The most disgusting thing to me is blatant lying. Miseducation, if you will.

You want to encounter an orca? Go take a day cruise in Prince William Sound in Alaska. Every bit as thrilling to see them in the wild, even if they aren't doing circus tricks. You might even get to see them nab a sea otter.

Can I do that for 69.95 a person, while sipping some blue juice out of a commemorative Shamu mug?

We just watched that on Netflix a couple weeks ago. I was floored by the numbers they presented as well for life expectancy. I am never going to Sea World again. It seemed like they hired a bunch of kids to feed the whales, who happened to swim well. They weren't a trainer any more than I'm a stockbroker.

The other thing that floored me was that they've kept using the semen of that whale that attacked and killed all the people to continue their breeding program.
