  • My video game-obsessed boys loved Wreck-It Ralph and I didn't hate it.

Glad my favorite arcade game as a kid Tapper got some shoutouts. I played Root Beer Tapper at the Wilkinson Center every chance I got from the time I was age 9 or 10 until I started at BYU.

    • The Man With the Iron Fists

Not for kids at all with its over-the-top kung fu violence, and I really liked it. Sure, RZA certainly isn't the most seasoned actor, so a 17th century American runaway slave-blacksmith-martial arts master may still be a bit outside his wheelhouse. However, he sure delegates well. He cast this thing to the hilt- not sure that could've been done better (Russell Crowe, Lucy Liu, and every kung fu legend in Hong Kong). It does have that grimy, Tarantino-esque b-movie feel, which should be viewed as a success. Don't get me wrong- I love watching RZA. He has a cool voice, a cool presence, and he has that je n'sai quoi star quality, but the movie would have been better served with a different actor in the lead role. Cool popcorn flick for people that don't mind blood n guts just like (if not a bit more over the top than) kill bill. Oh- GREAT scoring, too. RZA takes pride in this stuff.

      Wreck-it Ralph

Definitely for kids and I really liked it. The voice casting was extremely on-point w/ John C. Reilly, Jack McBrayer, and Sarah Silverman absolutely killing it (although one may make the point that McBrayer's character is just Kenneth from 30 Rock. Oh well- at least we know what he does well). Cool, original concept and well-researched writing and animation. Good stuff! Definitely bearable watching for parents.

      • My wife, my daughter and I watched "The Horse Whisperer" last night. For some reason we had never seen it. We enjoyed it. Redford tried to do too much (too many stories going on) but Kristin Scott Thomas is a superb actress and a pleasure to watch. It was interesting to see Scarlett Johansson as a child actor. She was better in this movie than I've seen her in her grown-up roles.

        • We went to Argo tonight.

          I thought it was awesome.

Great story, Affleck does a really good job directing it, and it was sufficiently tense. How nuts was what they went through?

          • We went and saw "Flight" over the weekend. Washington does a really nice job with his part but I found the movie very depressing. It wasn't as depressing as "Leaving Las Vegas" but it had that feel.

This movie sucks. Probably worth the price just to see Catalina from My Name is Earl walk around naked for 5 minutes, though. Outside of the plane scenes and the cancer patient monologue, there wasn't a redeeming scene in the entire movie. Cliche Hollywood tripe, right down to the soundtrack.

I wasn't aware that was her. I'm usually pretty good with faces, I wonder why I didn't pick that up.

                    • "Price Check," starring Parker Posey, the Queen of the Indies. Very interesting movie, I think it won an award at Sundance. It kind of falls apart at the end (undisciplined direction/editing, maybe they ran out of money to finish it right), but still worth seeing.

I saw it last week with my wife and daughter and had the very same reaction. Too ambitious but we liked it.

                        • I thought Flight was really good. The crash sequence, especially the interior shots, was outstanding. Denzel's performance was excellent; an Oscar nomination is in the bag. He creates a character we want to see succeed, but who also disgusts and makes one long for him to be punished--a nice balancing act. Even the double-entendre title is well done, as the movie is filled with flights, those of the protagonist and those who run away from giving him the tough love he needs, thereby enabling his descent.

John Goodman's pusher character was very entertaining, but a bit too cartoonish, and I didn't buy some of the ethical lapses by the defense attorney (Don Cheadle--really good despite the lapses) at the end.

It's an interesting conflict that Washington's character should be severely punished for flying a passenger plane while high on vodka and cocaine, and yet it was probably the drugs that gave him the courage and presence of mind to do what he did and save a hundred lives who would have perished had he been sober. But I still want to administer a breathalyzer test to my pilots before flying.

I'd be interested to learn if I'm the only one around here who thought so highly of the movie.

We recorded it off of TNT. I went to bed 30 minutes into the movie.
