I could have sworn someone reviewed Ad Astra here yesterday and ripped on it a bit. I liked it. It's a little slow, but Brad Pitt is actually an okay actor these days, and he was able to convey his character's psychological anguish pretty well. Even though slow, I don't think it dragged. I liked it.

That's right. He said Interstellar (the movie where a man intentionally falls into a black hole, then morse codes to his daughter in the past using dust on the shelf) is more believable than a movie about space travel within the solar system. Hmmmmmm....Originally posted by falafel View PostThe_Tick

I didn't say it was more believable. I said it was a head-scratcher of a movie that was much more enjoyable. Ad Astra wasn't good. Brad Pitt was good in it, but the movie was boring AF.Originally posted by Green Monstah View PostThat's right. But it had enough payoff, a good soundtrack, and just enough stuff to be believable-ish. This is not Ad Astra.Jesus wants me for a sunbeam.

I saw Ad Astra. I'm a sucker for all those space movies. Brad Pitt was great. I kinda dig the slow moving approach, and this had a little bit of the 2001 Space Odyssey approach where you go back and forth between intense action and slow moving down time. The aspect I didn't like which kept it at good instead of great for me was how they handled the father-son relationship. This was a father-son movie first space movie second. The film didn't really hit a home run on that. Left me feeling a little flat.

2001 is a classic. Love it. I may need to go see this one.Originally posted by jay santos View PostI saw Ad Astra. I'm a sucker for all those space movies. Brad Pitt was great. Just watched the Chris Stuckman movie review of Ad Astra....he said that there is a reason why some folks might draw similarities to this movie and Interstellar, as they cinematographer was the same for both movies. So that would make sense that I felt a small similarity. He also said that it is similar to Interstellar, minus the action.

This is correct. This is also one of the reasons I like it.Originally posted by jay santos View PostI saw Ad Astra. I'm a sucker for all those space movies. Brad Pitt was great. This is correct, but it had enough action and visual effects to please the people who are only in it for the thrills.Originally posted by Northwestcoug View PostInterstellar was a movie about humanity and love first, and theoretical physics pron second.Jesus wants me for a sunbeam.

The recent discussion regarding IMDB vs. Rotten Tomatoes and other rating metrics was interesting, and became moreso with my two most recent trips to the cineplex to view Ad Astra and Rambo: Last Blood (pretty sure that when she returns the missus wouldn’t complain that I went without her). The two are pretty close on IMDB (7.1 vs. 6.9), but the Rotten Tomatoes ratings are very different (Ad Astra: 83% critics and 43% audience; Rambo: 28%/84%).
Like Brother Santos, I found Ad Astra to be somewhat similar in tone and presentation to 2001. My parents took me to see the latter on my sixteenth birthday in 1968; I was fascinated by it but my parents (reasonably bright and discerning people) thought it was a ridiculous snoozefest. Different strokes. Though not as good or groundbreaking as 2001, Ad Astra has lots of interesting bits, including a few exciting parts, but for me it was mostly a commentary on the father/son relationship and why joint efforts of humanity surpass those of the lone hero. There were some great shots underscoring the vastness of space and the smallness of the one. And Brad Pitt has finally won me over as a very good actor. Not for everyone, but recommended.
I went to Rambo more out of nostalgia than a real desire to see it. In the ‘80s my chums and I found the first three Rambos hilariously over the top, providing some amusing nights out. Alas, this (thankfully final) sequel was even more ridiculous but its cheek had no tongue in it. Stallone mumbles his trite, wooden lines with even less gusto than before and the absurdly violent conclusion left me only with a feeling of gratitude that my own suffering had come to an end. I assume the high audience rating for Rambo was the result of audience self-selection--last night’s crowd reeked of testosterone and Axe body spray, and the few females were clearly there out of a sense of obligation.
With both films, I’m with the critics this time around.
Next up, I’m looking forward to seeing me (the Earl) Friday night with my sis. I expect a somewhat different audience.
