I haven't read the books, but I did enjoy the movie.
My brother was also put off by the height issue. Having not read the books, I didn't care. Thought the movie was fine.

I was much more pissed at The Firm for its ridiculous departures from the book.

I really like the Reacher books, but I didn't love the movie. Maybe it was 5'5" Tom Cruise playing 6'5" Jack Reacher.
She kind of bugs me, but that's probably because I saw Gone Girl before watching Jack Reacher. I haven't read the books so I don't care about the height discrepancy.

It's just that Jack Reacher is supposed to be this big, burly badass and Tom Cruise has a hard time pulling that off.

Another reason I only read Mormon historical books. Comparing the movie to the book will never ruin a movie for me since I've never read the book

                • My Bff and I went to see The DUFF. It was so adorable and we enjoyed it sooooooo much. We were the only two in the entire theater and were seated smack dab in the middle of the theater on these chairs: (although it could have been those hemp protein shots we had in our smoothies- we ate a LOT of popcorn)

Like The Breakfast Club and Clueless before it, this movie turns teen stereotypes on their head. Or at least introduces us to new stereotypes. We have the gorgeous latina who is also a hacker and does martial arts. We have the beautiful blonde who wants to be not a fashion model, but a fashion designer. And then we have the DUFF. Designated Ugly Fat Friend. The friend on the periphery who exists merely to serve as a foil to the others in the group, making the others seem prettier and skinnier by comparison.

Women see this movie. Men, it's the perfect movie to take your girl to, whether she is a first date or some hot ginger you've been romantically linked to for 30 years. It's lightweight and feelgood and awshucks cute.

The mean girl in this movie is played by Bella Thorne, up and coming actress. I first saw her in Blended as Larry, Adam Sandler's tomboy daughter.

She cleans up nicely with blended Mom Drew Barrymore's help. I saw her next in Alexander and the Terrible Awful Day-- she was a mean girl then too. I guess she's in Divergent too. And now in The Duff. She's like J-Lo: she looks very different depending upon what look she's wearing.

                  • We went to Focus last week. Margot Robbie is nice to look at but a good con movie is one where you didn't see it coming, that's not the case with this movie.

I saw The Sting for the first time recently. Kept waiting for the higher order con to manifest itself but it never did. Seen too many subsequent con movies I guess.

                            • Standby - A Dublin airport employee (Brian Gleeson, Brendan's other son) wanders around town with his ex-flame (Jessica Pare) after she gets stuck there for the night on her way to the US. Has some nice scenes, but not enough. Would not recommend.

                              • Birdman - Very good film taht could have been great if it had better dialogue. As others mentioned, the camerawork was amazing. The music was also great. There was one scene where he's walking outside and there's a cool drum solo going on and he passes a guy on the street playing the drums...it was a cool tie of the music to the movie. I also liked the ending...and well the whole plot. The acting was also superb. It definitely deserved the Oscar.

Insurgent - Lame and dumb. I almost fell asleep. It was 2 hours long and I checked my phone when I first got bored, which was 45 mins in. I couldn't remember much from Divergent, which was also a lame movie, which didn't help. You expect downright unbelievable stuff in movies like this, but this one was over the top unbeleivable and just poorly written and shot. Maybe I'm colored by the fact I saw Birdman in teh same week. At some point all of these dystopian types of movies seem the same. In fact, I felt like I'd seen this same movie 5 times before....which made it boring.
