  • Big Fish.

I remember liking it a lot soon after it came out. I thought the acting was really good (especially Albert Finney). And I really enjoyed the message.

Fast forward a few years, with me being even more of a softy than I was before. I still like it a lot, though there's a couple of detours that could have been left out of the movie and it would have streamed along nicely. The last 10 minutes to me are quite moving, and made me ponder what my children think/will think of me as they grow older.

And, the 'Man of the Hour' by Pearl Jam at the closing credits is a very nice touch.

I really liked FNL. It resonated with me and I disagree that the story was shallow and without a moral. One of the themes of FNL that I identified with is the concept that a football team can become like family. Perhaps it could have been better but FNL struck me as "real".

Someone that finally gets around to watching FNL some 10 years later isn't expected to understand.

No idea why that was nominated for a best picture, as it must be the shallowest warconflict movie ever made.

The movie will win the award for most awkward end credit sequence ever.
Apparently Michael Moore didn't like American Sniper either...

BTW, I saw Fury over the weekend. Here is the Walter review: "Private Ryan but in tanks."

            Mostly agree with this.

I saw it over the weekend. Not bad, but not great. I read the book a year or two ago. The problem with both the book and the movie is that the story just isn't that compelling. Yes, both feature a ton of stuff about navy seals and the seals are so badass that that angle alone makes it interesting and worth checking out, but the story is really simple: he shoots a guy, then another guy, then another guy, then another guy, etc. There just isn't much in terms of a story arc that makes it interesting. In the book, Kyle spent a lot of time talking about seal culture, etc. to liven things up, and it appears he just totally made up some shit about Jesse Ventura (which was not in the movie). In the movie, they took quite a few liberties with the story in an attempt to hollywood it up. The scene at the end with the dust storm, the opposing sniper, the long shot, etc. did not happen. Not like that, anyway. And wow, they sure made his wife look bitchy. That part is believable, but it gets old.

I agree that the end credits were odd. No music? Really?

            • I saw Foxcatcher. Like many movies based on a true story, not too much literary value, but the production was fantastic. It dragged a bit in parts, but was superbly acted and the grappling acumen of Mark Ruffalo and Channing Tatum was almost believable. Mark Ruffalo nailed it a little better, but you can tell they put some work into it. I'm surprised they didn't use doubles for some of those scenes since the difference between what an actor looks like wrestling and an Olympic-caliber wrestler really is quite stark.

I also didn't get any homoerotic undercurrent in the relationship b/t John du Pont and Mark Schultz. Du Pont was certifiable, of course, but there's nothing to indicate his patronization of wrestlers was anything other than narcissism and insecurity, which the dynamic with his mother seems to indicate. If anything, the manufactured relationship between Du Pont and Mark Schultz stands as a contrast to show the genuine closeness of the fraternal relationship of Mark and Dave.

*also- if anyone can please explain to me why this is rated R, I'm all ears. No sex, very minimal violence, minimal potty words. This is a light PG-13 at best.

Kyle did make a 1.2 mile shot (confirmed kill). It wasn't the opposing sniper, however.

                    • Limited options at the Blue Water "Resort" last night, I watched With This Ring on Lifetime last night. Very confusing, the lacrosse/singing weirdo from American Pie is married living the good life with a cute wife and a dog, teaching HS English. Then a mysterious HS girl moves in next door and American Pie somehow buys a diner out from under his best friend and gets fired from teaching for a sexual abuse claim that doesn't get explained. Also his dog dies, perhaps under nefarious circumstances, you make the call.

I would have a hard time recommending people watch it.

Ha! If there is one thing that Michael Moore knows about, it is shooting people in the back. Well, for Michael Moore it is more stabbing in the back. So I can see his lack of respect for snipers who do their dirty work from a distance. I'll bet he hates military pilots too.

I bet Michael Moore is cool with drones...

Those drones are heroes unlike those snipers!

Was he just going for an everyone-should-feel-really-uncomfortable-while-walking-out effect, or what? I didn't like that.
