  • What We Do in the Shadows - Taika Waititi's mockumentary following a group of vampires (including one played by Jemaine Clement) living in Wellington. I thought it was actually one of the funnier movies I've seen in a while. It occasionally gets bogged down but it's worth seeing.

    • With the missus gone for a few days, I once again head out to movies she'd probably pass on. I wish I had followed her example before I walked into Blackhat this evening. Sure, I saw the poor Rotten Tomatoes rating (30% or so), but it's directed by Michael Mann (Last of the Mohicans, which I liked a lot) and it's an action movie about a hacker trying to destroy the world or something, so it's got to be interesting, right? Nope. The ONLY enjoyment I experienced throughout the experience, other than the popcorn, was a large group of very nerdy young people, possibly a Googler get together, who would audibly decry the obvious shortcomings and inaccuracies in the tech side of the story. I wanted to point out to them that the supreme technowhiz of the movie was being played by Chris Hemsworth, a bit like casting a young Arnold Schwarzenegger as Mark Zuckerberg; cinema verite this was not. I have a hundred other complaints about this brooding, overwrought waste of 2+ hours but I prefer to stop thinking about it. Don't go.

      • American Sniper was interesting, but a bit of a letdown. The best part of the movie was when the Iraqi kid picked up the RPG. Pretty decent acting on Cooper's part.

Yeah. Depp and Paltrow's stars are both fading just a bit.

I thought the same thing; the trailers were remarkably bad. If a trailer for a comedy can't make you smile, much less laugh, at least once, you know you're looking at a major bomb. And Gwyneth Paltrow's appearance on Fallon did nothing to dispel the sense of impending awfulness.

The producers apparently didn't release Mortdecai for critical reviews, and with good reason. The movie's now out and has garnered a 9% rating from the forty or so critics who have seen it.

                    • Four Weddings and a Funeral - Finally saw it years late. Thought it was totally mediocre. Both leads were entirely unlikable and the relationship was based on nothing beyond a willingness to sleep together even when one of them was engaged to someone else. I suppose that's something, but it didn't strike me as the true love the movie was so concerned about. Read Ebert's review to try to figure out why it was so beloved and found that his summary was factually incorrect on a meaningful plot point. Maybe he just wasn't paying attention. All that said, the scene where Rowan Atkinson administered vows was hilarious.

The World's End - Fun little movie. Great ending. Hot Fuzz was probably better, but I enjoyed it.

Seven Psychopaths - Martin McDonagh's follow up to In Bruges. Lots of great scenes and great dialogue, but it never totally came together for me. Woody Harrelson is great as the bad guy whose dog is stolen by Sam Rockwell and Christopher Walken.

No idea why that was nominated for a best picture, as it must be the shallowest warconflict movie ever made.

The movie will win the award for most awkward end credit sequence ever.
Saw this yesterday. Good movie but not great. Felt really disjointed. I recommend seeing it but don't go in with high expectations.

and how the government pretty much messes up everything.

When Paleontologist Peter Larson and his team from the Black Hills Institute of Geological Research made the world's greatest dinosaur discovery in 1990, they knew it was the find of a lifetime; the largest, most complete T. rex ever found. But during a ten-year battle with the U.S. government, powerful museums, Native American tribes, and competing paleontologists, they found themselves not only fighting to keep their dinosaur but fighting for their freedom as well.
If you have any interest in paleontology and like a story with lots of twists and turns then it is worth a watch.

I can vouch for this one -- it's really well done. I will say that commercial fossil hunters cause a lot of problems and cause many great specimens to be lost to science, so I think the movie's portrayal of the government as evil and ignorant might be a bit over the top. The team that discovered Sue were in the right on this one, and it's an awful shame they didn't get to see it through and had to face such ridiculous opposition.

It's great that the specimen ended up where it did, though, so I suppose the saga has a relatively happy ending.
