  • Django Unchained. Tarantino is a genius and my man-crush of Christoph Waltz is redlining. I hope Tarantino has a long and productive career.

That scene where the mob is debating what to do with their hoods was hysterical.

At least 45 minutes too long. But I agree with your other points.

        • I also just saw Django. It's probably #1 on my list as far as entertainment, but I have a pretty big problem with Dr. Schultz' behavior toward the end. I get how it was necessary to allow the plot to unfold, but it was completely out of character in many ways. I also didn't like how there wasn't a single decent female character. Tarantino's usually better at that. Limitations of the genre, perhaps, but it also takes me out of the element when the only woman of note is a shrieking damsel in distress.

So, it's an awesome, unserious movie. Reading about all the anachronisms and inaccuracies on IMDB afterward was pretty funny. I had gotten the impression that Tarantino didn't make any attempt, and sure enough. Jamie Foxx was perfect. I'm glad Will Smith turned it down, although this could have been a good career opportunity for him -- a badass who doesn't say "Ah hell naw" constantly would be a nice change.

And yeah, Christoph Waltz is dreamy.

          • The beginning sequence of Django, with the cool rock formations, was shot 45 minutes from my house in the Alabama hills. Fun to see. Tremors, and the Afghanistan portions of Ironman were filmed in the same area.

Absolutely. This is what stuck in my craw about the movie that I otherwise thoroughly enjoyed. I have to believe they could have easily made the plot follow the same trajectory without upending his character and breaking my suspension of disbelief/ immersion in Tarantino-land.

              • Waltz is awesome. Dude has won two Academy awards for playing the same character. Not bad!
So Russell...what do you love about music? To begin with, everything.

                • I hadn't been to a movie in forever, but my youngest BIL wanted to go out over the weekend while we were visiting. I let him pick the movie. The last movie I saw is now GI Joe: Retaliation.

                    • Killing Them Softly. Mob hit-man movie starring Brad Pitt. Not bad, but not great. Decent character movie but not much of a plot. Kind of fun to see James Gandolfini playing a gangster again.

                        Ha. No kidding.

He was good in Water for Elephants and fantastic in Carnage. Looking forward to his next role.

Not to be confused with the late-night cable special Killing Me Softly starring Heather Graham.

                          • Random question, but why is IMDB's "people also liked" feature so messed up?

I think Jennifer Lawrence is genuinely talented and then I wonder how the hell someone like Jessica Chastain becomes one of the "it" girls all of a sudden and is in every other movie. She must have a great agent or something.

Katheryn Bigelow knows how to put together great action sequences. The scene where they raid the compound is incredible.
I think Jessica Chastain is a great actress, but I agree that she was pretty annoying in Zero Dark Thirty. I loved that movie, but I don't think she was right for the role.

                              • We saw "42" tonight. It was a little slow for me. Historically everything seemed okay which can be a real deal breaker for me and sports movies but it just didn't do it for me.
