Prepare to put mustard on those words, for you will soon be consuming them, along with this slice of humble pie that comes direct from the oven of shame set at gas mark “egg on your face”! -- Moss
There's three rules that I live by: never get less than twelve hours sleep; never play cards with a guy who's got the same first name as a city; and never go near a lady's got a tattoo of a dagger on her body. Now you stick to that, everything else is cream cheese. --Coach Finstock

The photos are broken on Tapatalk and work seems to once again be blocking CS as "suspicious", so I think he's in the clear. For now!Originally posted by Donuthole View PostBut will Dwight Schr-ute approve?

you'd think adam driver could get a better gig than thatOriginally posted by swampfrog View PostConcert shots of "What Haunts You" at the Analog Cafe 05/28/17. 1/250 second with external flash mounted on camera. f/2.8 ISO 400. Small venue above a cafe/bar in Portland, OR. Way too loud and nearly unintelligible vocals. Mix was completely off, dominated by bass guitar and drums. I felt sorry for the bands, these small tours have got to be brutal. Drive yourself all over the country in rental vans to play in small clubs with sometimes just a few people. Play short set of 4 to 5 songs. Haul your own equipment up and down stairs. I've never shot in this kind of lighting before with flash that also involved movement. Wasn't sure the max flash sync speed of 1/250 was going to be enough to freeze the motion, but it was.

Do you find the birds are usually honest in their answers or is it a Brexit/Trump thing where they don't want to be judged for their views?Originally posted by Dwight Schr-ute View PostThis morning's sunrise during bird surveys.

Much has been made of the iPhone 7's portrait mode. I think it makes the subject pop, to be trite. You decide.

It is useful to blur out distracting items in the background without having to spend time in photoshop.

It successfully applies a Gaussian blur to the background to separate subject from the background, but the claim to adding depth to the photo is marketspeak. A real sense of depth comes from the transition areas where the further objects are from the camera, the more blurry they become. Note the palm leaf, it should not be as blurry as the distant cliffs, but it is, and my brain screams not natural. That's not to say it isn't preferable to the original, just that it's still not up to what a large sensor with fast glass can do. When the camera can measure distance information of all subjects and add corresponding amounts of blur, we'll be getting somewhere.Originally posted by Katy Lied View PostMuch has been made of the iPhone 7's portrait mode. They are just trying to emulate a really good camera. I think you are correct, but the tradeoff in convenience and ease of use more than justifies it for all but a handful of people.Originally posted by swampfrog View PostIt successfully applies a Gaussian blur to the background to separate subject from the background, but the claim to adding depth to the photo is marketspeak. I think I acknowledged that the effect is preferable, I should probably add that it seems well done, but part of those images reside in the uncanny valley.Originally posted by creekster View PostThey are just trying to emulate a really good camera. Did a little more research on what/how Apple does it, and it is supposed to be a graduated effect. From what I've seen it blurs things a little too much that are still relatively close to the identified subject. I wonder it they offer any settings to change the strength of the effect now or in the future? From the other photos online I saw, with the right material, it's very effective. Looks like it uses an image from each camera and then uses software to blend them. They should be able to provide and app to refine the effect in that case. Should be interesting to see where it goes.Originally posted by swampfrog View PostI think I acknowledged that the effect is preferable, I should probably add that it seems well done, but part of those images reside in the uncanny valley.

It also might just be my eye having looked at too many portraits. With optical bokeh, when the background begins to blur that quickly, the effect from a somewhat long and fast lens begins to blur the most distant parts of the subject also, and that is not happening with the iPhone (yet). You actually have to be careful to actually focus on the closest eye with most portraiture, and the ears will already begin to be soft because of the thin depth of field. See tooblue's photos above.Last edited by swampfrog; 06-08-2017, 05:34 PM.
