    • I spent all day, from 7AM to 8PM grilling and roasting meat. I had a blast, but in the back of my mind I kept thinking how much I miss my dad and how much I wanted him there.

      • After being super sick for a few days, it is always scary delving back into eating anything. . .even as hungry as I feel.

In other news, I ordered my Halloween costume. Queen Arwen. Trying to decide if it is worth the battle to convince Aristides to be Aragorn instead of Gandalf, like he wants.

That will be fun! Do you dress up every year, or are you guys headed to a party?

We haven't dressed up every year. Aristides isn't a huge fan of it, but lately friends of ours keep having parties and so I have convinced him to have some fun with it. Lord of the Rings will top my favorite year thus far when I was Princess Leia and he was a Jedi.

We did the Star Wars thing once, too, only he insisted on being Darth instead of Han.

We're trying to decide whether to have a costume party for our kid's birthday this year. He's turning 13, though, and some of the kids (parents?) have questionable judgment when it comes to costumes.

Yeah, 13 year old costumes and parental support of said costumes baffles me at times. At our school last year, one kid in the 7th grade dressed up as a pimp and from the looks of most of the girls' costumes, they worked for him.

                  13? Geeze, time flies.

                  Good luck with costume control.

I know a woman whose daughters told her she wanted to go as a "slut" but decided to go as a "good girl" to surprise everyone. Her mother was relieved. She reported back that the "good girl" costume was a hit, as most of the other girls went as "sluts". This applied to the 14 and 15 year old girls.

Whoops-a-daisy: 'Significant' outdoor bust in Lethbridge history wasn't weed

All police will concede at this point is the 1,624 plants torn from a suburban Lethbridge garden on July 30 isn’t marijuana, as first claimed after a phalanx of police marched in and starting plucking.

“This is a significant bust, given the size of this operation,” is how a senior officer put it at the time, while proudly displaying garbage bags full of the dastardly daises.

That same officer, Staff Sergeant Wes Houston, now admits the plant haul was a mistake.

“In any investigation, police count public safety as our top priority — our decision to seize the plants was made with the best information we had at the time,” said Houston, leader of CFSEU-Lethbridge.

                          • Random thoughts from St George (not a Utah-bashing post):

                            1. The area between Las Vegas and Mesquite is pretty much the ass crack of the US. Ugh. I've driven it upwards of 50 times or so and never liked it.

                            2. Still don't get the appeal of a slot machine. Bemused me to find chain smokers still going strong at 5 am when I got up for a run.

                            3. I enjoy St George every time I come through. Nice town. I could maybe even live here. Maybe. (Cedar City still wins).

                            4. Y'all gotta do something about women's hair here. Not all. Just some. Typically a woman about my age, maybe a touch older, looks like she is single-handedly trying to destroy the ozone layer with her hairspray and highlights. 1998 called and...well, you know.

                            5. Holy shit this marathon course is downhill!

                            6. Mountain Meadows moved me to tears and I can't figure out why since I have no connection there whatsoever. Glad I went.

                            7. Expo tally: Utah shirt, one woman. USU shirt, one dude. BYU gear, everybody else but me. At least that's what it felt like.

I guess this means you've never driven from Salt Lake to Reno.
