Another Saturday. Another day of Wiz Khaliffa’s ninja turtle song ‘shell shocked’ getting stuck in my head.

This article on the health dangers of Zyn and other nicotine pouches is interesting. It doesn't really say what the dangers are, other than it being addictive and it's supposedly marketed to kids. This is the most authoritative statement in the article:
I'm surprised that we don't have a full safety profile yet on nicotine. How is that possible after decades of research on tobacco? This persons job is focused on tobacco control and she has the resources of a world class university at her disposal, and the best she can come up with is that nicotine might give you a tummyache?Dr. Donna Shelley, professor and vice dean for research at the New York University School of Global Public Health, said that while nicotine pouches don’t cause the same health problems as products containing tobacco, she wouldn’t call them “safe.”
“Some of the negative health effects of the nicotine pouches include gastrointestinal symptoms, like nausea, gum soreness and ulcers, and also some cardiovascular risks like elevated heart rate,” said Shelley, who researches tobacco control, adding, “We don’t know the full safety profile yet.”
I do take the point about marketing to kids seriously, but would like to see a similar standard for cannabis and caffeine. Almost every form factor for cannabis consumption, other than smoking, seems to appeal to kids (gummies, caramels, suckers, etc). And caffeine is out of control. It's in shampoo, aftershave, lotion, gum, lozenges, and thousands of different beverages. It's not healthy, either. Panera is facing multiple wrongful death lawsuits because of their caffeinated lemonade.
I don't really have a point here, just making an observation.

I need to drink less caffeine, but I really don't like plain water. Sometimes I'll add cinnamon sticks and apple slices to a pitcher to make it more palatable.Originally posted by YOhio View PostAnd caffeine is out of control. I read the linked article and I am confused. How did caffeine in lemonade lead to deaths? Is it super-charged or something? How is it different from coke, pepsi, tea, coffee, etc?Originally posted by YOhio View PostI do take the point about marketing to kids seriously, but would like to see a similar standard for cannabis and caffeine. While I don't disagree with most of this post, I do think the bolded is inaccurate. "Smoking" cannabis comprises like 80% of the ways people consume it: joints, vapes, dabs/concentrates, bongs. I agree that gummies and candies would be pretty appealing to kids. Some of the cannabis drinks too. But kids aren't using tinctures and RSO syringes.Originally posted by YOhio View PostThis article on the health dangers of Zyn and other nicotine pouches is interesting. The drinks could be up to 300 mg of caffeine each (daily FDA max recommendation is 400 mg/day). It was included as part of monthly subscription that gave you unlimited soft drinks and coffee for $11/mo. People would drink 3 or 4 and not realize they had consumed 1200 mg of caffeine in a relatively short period of time. One kid had cardiac arrest.Originally posted by Jeff Lebowski View Post

https://www.today.com/food/news/pane...its-rcna154660The drinks first drew attention via influencer Sarah Baus, who posted a video on TikTok in late 2022 about her dining experience at Panera one afternoon. Baus claimed she unknowingly drank “four or five” highly-caffeinated Charged Lemonades. The TikToker assumed the drinks had a “normal amount of caffeine.”
While Baus came out of her experience with millions of TikTok views, some others were not so fortunate, according to a suite of lawsuits hitting the bread-based chain.
Panera’s souped-up refreshers contained 155 — 302 milligrams of caffeine (depending on serving size and flavor, according to Panera) skirting quite close to the FDA recommended limit of 400 milligrams per day.

I would have expected this to be lower. I guess I'm fine.Originally posted by falafel View Post

There's a reason for this. The psychoactive effects are much quicker with smoking, etc., and are typically more predictable. Edible marijuana takes longer and can be very unpredictable.Originally posted by falafel View Post
