  • It seems like every single Amber Alert involves a non-custodial parent taking a kid. And it seems like they're all resolved within a very short period of time without the Amber Alert being of any help. Last night at around 4AM an Amber Alert was issued by South Salt Lake that went to the ENTIRE state. The thing is, the police neglected to actually put any information into the alert. They must have known I forgot to put my phone on silent last night.

    While I know that non-custodial parent abductions take place around 1000x more often than a true stranger kidnapping, wasn't the stranger kidnapping the real impetus behind the Amber Alerts? A few years ago, they sent out an Amber Alert when a parent who has partial custody was an hour late turning a kid back over to the other parent. This kind of shit has to stop or people are just going to ignore these things or turn off the notifications, if possible.
    Part of it is based on academic grounds. Among major conferences, the Pac-10 is the best academically, largely because of Stanford, Cal and UCLA. “Colorado is on a par with Oregon,” he said. “Utah isn’t even in the picture.”

      My phone was on silent and still went off. I'm gonna have to find the setting to fix that.

        I have the Do Not Disturb function on my iPhone between midnight and 5:00 am, and my phone did not make a sound. My wife does not, so hers did go off and scared us both.

          You can always power it off. That is guaranteed to work.

            That's what I had on as well. I think settings are programmed in from the carrier. All I could do was turn off Amber Alerts altogether. And good riddance!

              I was using it to monitor my pork roast and the smoker. If the smoker were to go out (I've only ever had that happen once) I want to know so i can fix it. Also, if i overslept and the roast reached temperature (more likely) I'd want to know that as well.

              • Reading the comments in KSL, the last three Amber Alerts in Utah have been the following:

                1. Last night's which had NO information attached to it;

                2. One that included merely "gry tyt" in the description;

                3. No information in the alert other than to dial 511.

                What a bunch of idiots. I turned the Amber Alerts off altogether on my phone.

                  • Does anybody know - am I safe from receiving Amber Alerts if my phone number has an area code from a different state?

                    My wife and I never bothered changing our cell numbers when we left California. It seems that about 25% of people in our area have phone numbers with different area codes than the local area code. And will someone with an 801 area code receive these Amber alerts if they now live in Idaho?

                        A little girl is with her biological mother!!

                        Let’s send an alert to every phone in Utah and surrounding states at 3:30 AM.

                        (Haven’t they studied Swampfrog’s data?! The kid is just fine statistically speaking.)

                          • You can turn off amber alerts. I haven’t received one in a long time.

                                I slept through it, which is amazing because I am a relatively light sleeper and the alerts are loud as hell. What good is an Amber Alert with no information?
