P. S.doctorcoug, the old Rice Stadium had a track around the field. It was there until the remodel that dropped the field. Late 80's early 90's? I don't remember the year. Besides, East High school has a fantastic track stadium, and is practically on campus.

I don't understand this point of "commuter school" being a stigma. On any campus it's mostly the freshman and some sophomores who live on campus. Evenyone else "commutes". Most schools don't have enough housing for the entire student body. Moreover, to even many freshmen and sophomores, living in the dorms is a badge of shame. They like to get out of the campus and commute as soon as humanly possible.
Universiy of Washington is in the state's biggest city (like Utah) and has perhaps 40,000 students who "commute". Seattle and its eviorons produces the greatest share of the student body. The same is likely true for Cal and UCLA.
The only place I hear "commuter school" used as an epithet is among BYU students. MikeWaters repeats it all the time. But the term only resonates with BYU fans. No doubt because it's a way they can seem to disparage Utah.
It can't mean that Utah students live at home more than other students. I've never seen a statistic that supports that. When a true genius appears, you can know him by this sign: that all the dunces are in a confederacy against him.

I don't think anyone uses "commuter" as one who doesn't live on campus. In your example, plenty of kids at the UW don't live on campus, but they almost all live in the U District -- I don't think anyone thinks of those kids as commuters. Commuter to me is someone who comes to campus and its immediate environs for class and leaves immediately thereafter. If a kid is coming to campus from the Eastside and going back every night, that's a commuter in my estimation.Originally posted by SeattleUte View PostI don't understand this point of "commuter school" being a stigma. SU:
I'm posting on here because I garner amusement out of picking on you. Your online persona is passionate about what you love and I can respect that. I think your online persona is closed-minded, so I like to pick at it, like I would my little brother.
Truth be told, if I had been accepted to Utah's medical school, I would have gone. My scores were better than their average, but I was average (white RM who speaks a second language and did no research). i didn't get accepted and went elsewhere.
Some of the best schools are commuter schools. I think this whole thread is the "pick on SU" thread."Don't expect I'll see you 'till after the race"

Back in high school I remember talking with some of my buddies from around the state about where they wanted to go, and we always came back to "Utah doesn't even have a track".
Some of those bozos went to Weber State, who had an amazing coach at the time with an amazing team. I was the only one to go to BYU. The smartest of these elite milers went to Stanford. I lost track of that guy, but all the rest are racing professionally, whatever that means. I gained 80 lbs and now know how to manage cardiogenic shock.
I just always thought it funny that elite high school runners from Utah would consider Weber State over Utah."Don't expect I'll see you 'till after the race"

I like the University of Utah, though I think their campus is inconveniently perched on the side of a mountain."Wuap's "problem" is that he is smart & principled & committed to a moral course of action. His actions are supposed to reflect his ethical code.

It certainly makes commuting difficult.Originally posted by wuapinmon View PostI like the University of Utah, though I think their campus is inconveniently perched on the side of a mountain."You interns are like swallows. You shit all over my patients for six weeks and then fly off."

At the game on saturday I heard a fan say, "I've never even heard of BYU"Originally posted by mUUser View PostIve never run into anyone outside the wardhouse lobby that gives a crap about Utah or BYU. I looked into it. The field was lowered in 1982, when they built the South end zone.Originally posted by doctorcoug View PostInteresting info.

The Web Cats always had a great track program. Track at the U has been very poor for a long time, although their Biathlon team is world caliber (a number of Olympic athletes were on the team when I was in school). Hopefully a move to the PAC, plus the new facilities, will lead to a better track program.
In the end it came down to money. The U historically did not get much support from the state in terms of facilities. Contrast that with BYU who always seemed to have an open checkbook for sports complexes, training complexes, weight rooms, lockers, etc. It is only through growth in the local economy and interest in Utah sports (and grants for the Olympics) that they have been able to play 'catch up' in this regard. They have a long way to go in terms of facilities, but they have also made great strides over the last two decades.
Hopefully one day they afford to get rid of that hideous monstrosity, the Behavioral Sciences Building, and replace it with something that at least doesn't look so Soviet with its formed concrete.
With PAC money coming in perhaps the athletic department will be able to self-fund all the necessary athletic facility needs, and allow the University to obtain the necessary funds for facility upgrades.
Also FWIW, they installed their SECOND Scanning-Tunneling Electron Microscope on campus when I was up there. That was some progress, and they joined a very small cadre of schools with two STEMS (one in chemistry dept in the Henry Eyring Building, the other in Material Science/Engineering bldg).

Do you work at the Death Star (IMC) otherwise? Foothill is the main corridor allowing 50k+ people into the U and Research Park every morning, so plan ahead.Originally posted by CardiacCoug View PostYeah, really not a great location at all for a commuter school.
I have the misfortune of having to drive up there some mornings and that drive along Foothill really sucks.

Maybe 'commuter school' is code for 'nothing else to do in town'. Washington State is NOT a commuter school. It was popular because Idaho had a drinking age of 18.Originally posted by SeattleUte View Post
