A veteran - whether active duty, retired, or national guard or reserve is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to, "The United States of America ", for an amount of "up to and including my life - it's an honor."

What was the name of Phil Sheridan's horse? The dark one?
He had an original name and then was renamed. I would accept either.Last edited by Borderline Divine; 05-13-2011, 12:27 PM.The Holy War is over, and Utah won - Federal Ute

Another warm-up question:
Q: In 1864 a major civil war naval battle was fought just off the coast of Cherbourg, France. Name the two ships involved.Last edited by Jeff Lebowski; 05-13-2011, 12:32 PM."There is no creature more arrogant than a self-righteous libertarian on the web, am I right? just out of curiosity, who are your top three generals on each side - in order
FWIW here are mine
Union
Sherman - innovative strategist, able to inspire loyalty and devotion in his men
Thomas = excellent tactician, superb in the defense, also able to inspire loyalty and devotion in his men
Grant = good strategist, wouldn't give up, average tactician
some others in consideration
Hancock, Meade, Reynolds
South
Lee - excellent tactician, able to inspire loyalty of his subordinates and get the best out of them
Joe Johnston - excellent on the defense, mediocre politician
Thomas Jackson - limited experience in independent command, superb tactician, able to inspire extreme devotion in his men
Others deserving of consideration
Longstreet, Beauregard, Bragg, Forrest
I may be small, but I'm slow.

Looks good, but I don't know how you could put Johnston over Forrest.Originally posted by happyone View Postjust out of curiosity, who are your top three generals on each side - in order

basically limited independant command experience - Jonston's retreat from Chatanooga was masterful. I think Forrest was the best Cavalry commander in the war on either side, Stuart in the only other in consideration. The North doesn't really have anybody in the running. Also how could I forget lil phil for the north - I guess I would put him 4th ahead of MeadeOriginally posted by Jeff Lebowski View PostLooks good, but I don't know how you could put Johnston over Forrest.Last edited by happyone; 05-13-2011, 12:58 PM.

Here's another easy one:
Q: Which civil war leader is thought to have been the first Grand Wizard of the KKK following the war (in spite of his denial of having been a member)?
Follow up question: what was his nickname in the war?"There is no creature more arrogant than a self-righteous libertarian on the web, am I right? Those folks are just intolerable."

Foote said that in his opinion, the Civil War produced two true geniuses: Lincoln and Forrest.
