I read in an Irish-American magazine awhile back that the the Irish immigrant units on both sides(most of them fought for the North) had generals who would meet and write each other letters about how they would raise up an army after the civil war was over and attack the UK in Canada. They basically had mini-truces where they would discuss how to do it etc.
After the civil war a small group of Irish soldiers did invade Canada and attack some local militia. Then it kind of fizzled out when England threatened the US with all out war.
