Another little discussed topic in civil wars discussions is how important it was to the nation that Lee surrendered his army and told his soldiers to go home, not to disband into guerilla groups and ravage the countryside. This is discussed at length in a great book entitled "11 days in April." I'll find the author later.

I've been watching these at lunch since you posted this and they're fantastic. What a fascinating time in military history, when weapons were changing so rapidly and tactics couldn't keep up.
