Two apps I've not seen mentioned that I feel are worth having:
UrbanSpoon: Free App that shows you what restaurants are in your city, and can be sorted by type of cuisine and neighborhood, along with a percentage of other users that like the place and reviews of the restaurant. Supports a lot of cities including Salt Lake. It's helped my find a couple of good restaurants I wouldn't have found otherwise.
Yowza: A coupon program, giving you coupons for various stores based off of your location. It will allow you to save the coupon so that you don't need an Internet connection while in the store. Free App.

I didnt dig the urban spoon offering. Buggy at first, at least as of a few months ago, also not anywhere near as complete as the website. Yelp is probably better for a freebie.Originally posted by CougarSooner View PostTwo apps I've not seen mentioned that I feel are worth having:

That should do it.Originally posted by Art Vandelay View PostIf I'm understanding this thread correctly, in order to get a DVD to my iPad.
1) Rip DVD to my desktop with Handbrake
2) Install VLC on my iPad
3) Add File to iPad while syncing to desktop
4) Watch movie
Is this correct? I have VLC, but haven't downloaded or tried using HandBrake yet.
You can use the same process to get a DVD to your iphone (although I don't think you actually NEED VLC) or any other smartphone.Ain't it like most people, I'm no different. We love to talk on things we don't know about.

If you are using handbrake you should be able to select the iPhone/iPad profile in "presets" to make the ripped video compatible with the default video app (making VLC unnecessary).
Another option if you have a UPnP/DLNA server on your laptop you can actually just stream the video from your computer and play the videos using something like the AirPlayer app. This saves the step of transfering the video to your iPad. I use AirPlayer to watch TV programs that I recorded using MythTV.Last edited by Uncle Ted; 12-29-2010, 11:58 AM."If there is one thing I am, it's always right." -Ted Nugent.

VLC helps to play some video formats that won't otherwise play on the iPad, or that might not play very well. If you're ripping your own DVDs (instead of downloading videos from the internet or something), you probably won't need VLC.Originally posted by TripletDaddy View PostIf you dont need VLC if you rip with handbrake, when do you use VLC? Now I'm more confused. I tried to rip a DVD (which I own, not trying to be illegal here), but it can't read it. I go to the handbrake website and read this:
So if HB doesn't rip all DVDs, but VLC will read most formats. So do I need another ripping program and then can just bypass HB and watch the movies with VLC.:confused2:Disk won't rip? Try these steps:
First off, you should know that HandBrake is not a DVD ripper. There are many of those out there. For Mac, the best option is Fairmount paired with DVD2OneX. For Windows, it's AnyDVD. HandBrake's about video conversion, not stripping copy protection. For best results, you should feed HandBrake unprotected video.

I use the (default) videos app to play videos that I rip using handbrake. Other videos (such as Ted Jr's highlight vids) I use VLC because they are not in the right format.Originally posted by TripletDaddy View PostIf you dont need VLC if you rip with handbrake, when do you use VLC? The subject of Home Theatre PCs (HTPCs) and the software used (e.g. "MythTV") really deserves a thread of its own. In short, I am currently using some "Open Source" software called MythTV on a PC connected to a directv receiver to record programs like all the BYU football games. Included as part of MythTV is an [ame="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Universal_Plug_and_Play"]Universal Plug and Play - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia[/ame] server that allows the videos or music on the HTPC to be played on other devices (e.g. iPad or PS3) that are connected to your home network. After using and hacking on MythTV for about three years or so I am about to replace it with Plex and EyeTV running on a Mac Mini, however. My mythtv HTPC is showing its age and I am too busy to hack on it much any more.Originally posted by TripletDaddy View PostI have no idea what you are talking about in the second paragraph but it sounds cool."If there is one thing I am, it's always right." -Ted Nugent.
