  • Best iPhone/iPod Apps

I thought this would be a good thread for all the iPhone/iPod/iPad owners out there. There are so many fantastic apps, and I figure this will be a useful thread for many years.

Here are some of my personal favorite apps:

Let's Golf--costs like 5 bucks. Great golf game. Love to play it during down time.

Dragon Dictation--free. You can dictate all your emails and text messages. It rarely makes mistakes. Doesn't understand technical (scientific/medical/legal) terminology, but otherwise it works like a charm.

Paper Toss--free. Toss crumpled paper into office wastebasket across the room, taking into account wind speed from nearby fan. My current record is 262 in a row without a miss on easy mode.

Flight Track--costs a few bucks. Fantastic app. Monitor any flight--any time. Accurate real time information on delays, etc. This has been a life saver several times.

Around Me--free. It'll tell you what's around you (stores, restaurants, pharmacies, interesting places, anything you can imagine). Nice to use when you're in unfamiliar territory.

Need for Speed Undercover--costs a few bucks. Great race car game. You steer by turning your iPhone from side to side.

Red Laser--costs a few bucks. Use this app to scan any bar codes via the iPhone camera. It'll find the best price on the internet. Shop Savvy is a similar app that compares the price at the store where you're located to surrounding stores.

Viper--keyless entry or start your car from anywhere. If you own this app, just don't lose your phone. Also if you have this app and have children, don't let your kids play with your phone. Requires Viper keyless entry and remote starter system in car (500 bucks).

I like Red Laser. I don't find it incredibly useful, but I think it is neat. I wish there were more apps like this, that fall into the category of "neat things you wouldn't think you could do with a phone".

I have a bunch of standard apps like Pandora, Google Earth and Facebook. A couple of others I use, but are not as common, are:

LDS Scriptures This is great to have on your phone. Its primary use is as something you can switch to very quickly when your wife asks you what you are doing during Sacrament Meeting.

iStake Much quicker and easier than going to LDS.org. The whole stake directory and calendar at your fingertips. With the newest release, you can add stuff from the stake calendar to your calendar, if you set it up correctly. If you set it up like I did, it will add it twice.

Cello Tuner Tune your cello without a piano around!

Tempo I am a Ward Choir Director with a bad sense of timing. This is a metronome program with a good set of options. I can put it on the stand and have it flash so I can keep better time.

      Stanza Decent e-book reader

Lux Touch This is a Risk-type game. Unfortunately, it is way too easy to win. I never lose anymore, but will still sometimes play it when I have 10 free minutes on the train or something.

      Scrabble

iSwing I actually just bought this and have never used it. I put it here because it sounds cool. It records your golf swing and helps to analyze it. I'm hoping this finally gets rid of my slice.

Runmeter Combination GPS, stopwatch, and route tracker for exercising. Kind of like a Garmin Forerunner, but you don't have to upload the data. Neat, but hard to work the controls when running.

This sounds like an appealing app, except I'm worried that it could somehow trick me into becoming more active.

Cocktail Compass - if you use it at any time of day, it tells you what restaurants are currently offering happy hour (sorted by neighborhood) and how much time remains before the last order. My wife and I hit happy hours fairly often to try new restaurants that we otherwise couldn't really afford. And given our economic downturn, many restaurants have expanded their happy hour offerings to get people through the door. Also, it's free! The only downside is I'm not sure how many cities it covers. But worth checking to see if it's in your area.

I just searched for this. Looks like it has already been taken down.

                    Now that was fascinating.

They won't be able to hold this down forever.

I've had the ipod touch for a month now. I still cannot stand itunes at all. Love the Itouch and all it's apps, though.

I'm guessing someone lost their job today over that app making the NYT.

Seriously, wait until Toktumi or someone else develops the same thing for Android or any of the other OS out there. Now with Skype I think launching an app for Verizon and mobile hotspots popping up all the time the whole pay per minute model and even data to a large extent can go bye bye. This has potential to shake up the wireless world and their business model. Almost all smartphones now come equipped with wi-fi.

That Line2 app was sweet. I would have gladly paid the $15/mo fee for it. 2 lines on one phone. With all of those options? Genius. For the small business owner that is perfect. Hell for anyone that gets issued a work phone it is perfect. Run Line2 for your personal use. I used to have to carry two phones with my previous employer. Discriminating mormons could use Line2 just for church. I hate having my personal cell phone number listed on the ward roster since I haven't had a land line for a couple of years. Now I could give out the Line2 number and just screen those calls.

Apple will be able to regulate that app with their controlling marketplace, but the other players won't. And when people see the value of that app and its potential Apple will lose more marketshare. This app can have far reaching effects.

The app is still available in Canada. Of course, in Canada you don't have to sign up with AT&T. You have a choice of carriers to choose from.
