E39 M5 prices bottomed out about 3 years ago and have now started climbing. Cars with under 50k miles bring a premium. Asking price for this one was $25k, which is a little high but the condition is exceptional. Good examples with between 50k and 100k miles can be found in the $17k - $22k range and even high mileage or less well maintained M5's are priced above $12k.

The E39 (2000-2003) is the best, IMO. They have the best combination of comfort and features, performance, and simplicity. The new ones are more complex and less of a driver's car. They are wild performers, but you don't feel as connected to the car when you drive it. The earlier ones are more hand-built, but they aren't in the same league as far as performance or features. I've owned a 4-door E30. Stroked 2.7 liter motor and everything. The electronics are all pretty dated now but I installed an aftermarket bluetooth interface that connects up to my iPhone that works pretty well. I still have the six CD changer in it but I don't know if I even own six CDs to put in it any more. It even connects up the phone part so I can make calls as well.
I agree about the newer ones being way more complex. You can't service a new BMW anywhere but the dealership it seems. I take my M5 out into the country to an older german guy that was a master mechanic for BMW at one time. He loves working on my car and always asks if I want to sell it.
