I'll have to sneak out to his garage next time I'm at their house. He actually owns three of these beasts (but usually at least one is in the shop at any time).

Indeed. I don't get it. That is like marrying a super model and asking her to never take her clothes off.

But even if you do have to stretch a bit to afford it, the RS will be worth the pain. There are faster and more powerful alternatives, there are softer and less highly strung ones and there may even be better options for regular track-day use. But nothing else in the fast hatch arena combines real-world usability with real-road, any-condition pace, supreme driver involvement and such incredible bang for your buck. All of which, for a hot hatchback, seems just about the perfect definition of ‘exceptional’ in our book.

How does Ford get 345 HP with a 2.3L V4? That's similar HP that I get from my 5.7L V8.

That is ridiculous. I don't get anywhere near that mileage in my ST.

it's the ecoboost turbo. forced induction is the future in cars (and other engines, like turbofans with crazy bypass ratios). insane performance and efficiency potential.

Edmunds says the mpg is not available yet - wonder if the European combined mpg measurement is significantly different from what the EPA does.

It is amazing what those engine computers can do these days... ask VW. The key is you don't get both at the same time.

Don't know how many of you have been following the VW emissions scandal, but it looks like it has spread to include the 3.0L TDI motors in addition to the smaller motors. Today I was notified of Audi's "goodwill gesture," which includes $500 pre-paid Visa card, $500 credit from the Audi dealer, and 3 years of roadside assistance. I've got the best of both worlds because at the last minute a year ago, I decided to lease my Q5 TDI instead of buy it. So I don't really care what happens to the resale value of my Q5. I'll take their $1,000 now and in two more years I'll hand them the keys and walk away.

Even though I really like my Q5, I'm thinking about getting rid of it after only a year. I've fooled myself long enough that I don't really need a truck for work. I do need a truck, but I don't want to drive one every day. At the same time, my wife doesn't need her van anymore so I'm thinking about going with a combination. Sell both and either 1) buy a new truck and a used sedan or 2) buy an older truck and a new car.

In either scenario I think I'm going to buy a smaller truck. Something like a crew cab Tacoma except I've read good things about the new Chevy/GMC Colorado/Canyon. The current models even look better than the Tacoma.

If I buy a new truck I think I may actually go back to an older M5. I never should have sold my other one. I think that would be a winning combination. I'm thinking maybe a blue one this time.

If I buy a new car instead I would definitely go with a used Tacoma even though prices are high for even older ones.
