DD, does the fact that 12 people are taking your picture as you climb those boulders mean that you are doing something the rest of them aren't?

Yeah. That obstacle is called escalator. It is notorious for putting vehicles on their side. It can be technical because it is more difficult than it looks... you get on the wrong line and there is a very good chance that you are going over.

Here is a picture of a friends Jeep. He owns an off road parts and equipment company. His Jeep is completely built to wheel difficult trails... he probably has well over 20K worth of upgrades on it and he is a very experienced and competent off road driver. This was taken during the recovery on the escalator.

DD, I have a rule that I have never broken. That rule is that I can never, ever, ever be friends with people who own Hummers.

With the understanding that this rule was forged in rugged terrain of NYC and Houston, and after seeing what you do with yours, I am happy to make my first and perhaps only exception.

I prefer to go on foot, but it appears our taste in nature and activities is the same.

I have 5 in my family. We have a lot of gear. The Hummers are big enough to take my whole family out and carry all of our stuff and tow the trailer.

No... you wouldn't want to do that. The trailer is usually parked in a camping spot and the family and I take the truck out. On the escalator... I am the only one in the truck.

This is how you drop into "Hells Gate" in order to climb back out. My kid is on the rock on the right, a friend from Texas is riding with me. He drives an H1, but was too scared to drive his own rig up the gate.



This is what can go wrong if you don't pay attention to your spotter. My spotter is a friend that lives in Moab and drives an H1... he knows what he is doing. You see him in a lot of my pictures.

I have to say that I disapprove of the use of DD to address you. It'd almost be like someone registering with the name wuapinman.

As to your worry about all the intellectuals being bothered by your "redneck" photos, vainly speaking for them, I think you have the wrong idea. Being an intellectual, or even a "so-called" one, doesn't mean that we don't like cool shit. It just means that we have little regard for backwards ways of thinking that often accompany redneck activities. I grew up on the fringe of rural areas around Atlanta that have since become suburbs. I have made steers of my grandpa's young bulls before; I can still hear their screams when that rubber band was released around their boys. The house I grew up in had no heat, only a fireplace, so my dad would order a load of logs every year, and we would saw them up and then split them with a go-devil. My house was next to a lake; I love to fish (there's a whole thread somewhere about fishing). I'm not a hunter, the one time I killed something, I felt dark inside, and I would only do it to survive. The thrill of the chase ended when I saw the dead body. I don't care if others hunt; I think it's a great way for men to bond, especially families.

I like to shoot, and I own several guns, though my wife won't let me keep them in the house (they're at my mom's and my grandpa's house).

I like working on projects around the house, and I don't mind getting my hands dirty, though sadly, all of the callouses on my hands from my youth are gone, and my hands are soft nowadays.

So, I've seen you mention "intellectuals" on here several times in your posts. Stop worrying. These photos have made you a legend, and you seem like a really cool guy, in spite of being a jarhead.



I have relatives who are rednecks. I love them. The potato guns and everything in their wardrobe is camo save church and work uniform lifestyle and ability to fix about any machine and can can anything from their garden or orchard is awesome stuff, and I love them for it. I do, however, wince when they blame all of their economic setbacks and all crime on "spics and niggers" and get into brutal arguments with me at Thanksgiving about illegal immigrants and gays and how if I don't think that the prophet is infallible that I don't think he's a prophet, and so on.

So, if you've got something awesome to share like your photos, please share away. Also, since I'm a pantywaist professor who teaches because he cannot do, don't worry about my opinions.

Tank is a great dog. I have always wanted an English Bulldog. He is great with the kids. He always wants to be inside the house... they don't do well in hot temperatures.

He is the rudest animal I've ever been around. He snores, burps, farts, and sheds. White dog hair is on everything I own. He is incredibly lazy except for short bursts. He weighs 75 pounds and is only six inches off the deck, so when he pins his ears back and gets going... his strength and low center of gravity make him damn near impossible to stop. I've seen adults that he wants to greet get knocked to the ground.

He is hilarious. When he sits he sits on his ass like a human, with his legs out and under him. He looks around when he's sitting like that and he reminds me of a fat, bald English dude, smoking a cigar in a pub.

Watching him take a shit makes me laugh everyday.

I've never spent a lot of time around people with graduate degrees. It is obvious that many people around here are very smart.

I was assigned to work for a battalion surgeon for awhile, a full Navy Captain. He was a great guy and was funny as hell. He liked porn a lot, and used to send me out to get new stuff from the other grunts.

I am around some attorneys for work now.

I think I missed the boat. During my youth I should have went to school instead of partying and playing with reckless abandon. My youth was all bitches, bikes, boats, and booze.

Ah... the good old days.

Now it's all about my kids. Football, lacrosse, hockey, baseball. Rec teams, travel teams and the little girl is on a dance team.

We use recreation to keep the whole family together. Sometimes we go in smaller groups due to schedule conflicts. I've taken both boys together with me camping and down to Moab, and I've taken them one at a time.

The last camping trip I went on it was just the girls (mom and daughter) and I.
