  • Funny thing about DevilDog is that for such a tough guy he sure is a big baby when BYU fans get their self-righteous on.

OMG! Totally ironic, unless maybe there are exceptions to the general rule, which there are. Here is my personal general rule followed by exceptions:

In general, I think it is becoming of members of CUF to first address our concerns about unintentionally offensive behavior from others privately, and second, publicly. The private contact is an attempt to allow the offending person to consider how his/her conduct is affecting others without unneeded public embarrassment. If the offender genuinely disagrees with the interpretation of his/her conduct, and persists in it, a public discussion becomes valuable as a way of discovering whether or not the offended person is just being thin-skinned, or whether the complaint is a genuine reflection of larger community values.

        * Exception 1: If the person is being obviously intentionally offensive, there is no reason to bother with the politeness of a private message.

        * Exception 2: Where there is levity, and the calling out is part of a joke, in this case the first rule of 'Don't be a dick' applies -- make sure that you are the butt of the joke at least as often as you make others the butt of the joke.

        * Exception 3: Where someone else has already focused the discussion on interpersonal conduct, it is okay to discuss interpersonal conduct.

Another of Robin's Rule's of Order: Ease newbs into the culture of CUF in as friendly and inviting a way as possible. Give newbs the benefit of the doubt, and extend to them every courtesy.

I have other rules of order, but these seem to be the ones applicable here.

My rules of order are merely my opinions, offered with the hope that they will contribute to making this board as friendly and inviting as possible. If you see no value to the idea of first addressing personal concerns privately, before airing them out in public, then you are welcome to ignore my opinions entirely.

Having this discussion in public means we are able to provide indirect input to lurkers and other new members and even to long time members. A PM does no such good. But if you prefer to follow your codification of whatever it was (to be honest, I didn't really make it through your whole post) that's great.
          PLesa excuse the tpyos.

            True that.

It was the whole LDS angle that threw me off my game.

I think I'm over my introspective analysis now.

I've decided that it must be that because BYU fans pay their tithing and keep the word of wisdom... they allow themselves the freedom to act the self righteous, sanctimonious, pious, holier than thou, ass - regarding BYU football.

                  • DD, Inspite the fact at one point you had to screw your helmet on, you are really welcome, FTR, I've enjoyed your comments.

I may be small, but I'm slow.

Here is the version short enough for you to finish:

We both agree on the benefits of discussing unintentionally offensive conduct in public. I see value in first trying resolve concerns privately. You don't.
