My brother is a cop. That video really hits home, especially after he's already been shot and he's asking the guy to stop.

Cops aren't perfect, but I give them the benefit of the doubt whenever I can.

Is it me or is the guy walking away to his car until he is shot again? not that it means anything.

I would love to use a lot of other words but I will avoid it. Maybe if he was in better shape he would not have felt it necessary to ruin a 20 year old woman's life.

So this is good public relations for cops?

I was mildly surprised that there are approximately 800,000-900,000 law enforcement officers in the US. I didn't expect the number to be that large.

This is sort of my point. It isn't to say that cops ought to get a pass when they do brutal things or that the danger they face somehow justifies them flaunting the constitution or not using best practices. But when you realize that EVERY traffic stop is potentially a life and death encounter and that you simply cannot tell by looking at people which one of them might try to kill you because they are crazy or have 20 felony warrants outstanding, then it makes a lot more sense why they take their own safety seriously and don't take chances with people who aren't following lawful commands.

As an aside, critical though I am of how it is sometimes used, that terrible video I posted is a pretty good argument for tazers. The officer kept shouting over and over for the guy to comply but his only options were shoot him or get into a physical confrontation with an asp or baton in which that gun might get taken from him. He obviously didn't want to shoot and once the danger became obvious it was too late. It would have been really nice for him to have a less-lethal weapon so he was not faced with the dilemma of whether to kill the man or let the situation escalate. There are a good twenty five seconds of the guy doing nothing more than acting like a jackass before he does anything threatening.

It seems high. It looks like the average number of local police officers/1,000 residents in the US is 2.5, if this data is correct and I'm reading it correctly: http://www.theiacp.org/LinkClick.asp...Pk%3D&tabid=87

And the primary cop/perp - Manuel Ramos - is a minority. Not the right optics for a press favorite.

                            • I give cops a lot of leeway on these kinds of things. In the ER, we see just a fraction of what these guys have to deal with--the perps who have medical complaints (or pretend they do to delay their trip to jail). I wouldn't want their job.

That video of UD's is heart-wrenching. The wikipedia article says he had a pregnant wife.

I dont see any room for leeway on the main story in the topic.
