The Official Big Ten Era Has Begun

Will this be the year a conference puts two teams in the CFP?

The Big Ten has slowly begun to remerge as a strong Conference with the potential to unseat the SEC from the top of the mountain.

With 2 teams in the top 4, 4 teams in the top 8 and another at 18. They have made a strong argument to have two teams be in the playoff this year.

Will it happen? It sure but it will be interesting to see what happens these last two weeks.

The question is.. Will Louisville get that 4th spot or Washington or Big Ten Conference champ.

The recent polls gives us an indication of where the Buckeyes are and will a win against UM (Fingers Crossed) be enough to keep them in the 2nd spot if they are not in the conference championship. I believe so..

Big 10 seems to have identified the pattern to cheat the system. Most of the teams in your conference should suck. Then split up the four best teams between two divisions and let them all finish with 1-2 losses.

Interesting that the start of the "Big Ten Era" correlates with a return to the rankings of a particular #18 ranked team. Kidding aside, the only way that the B1G challenges the SEC is if the West division gets stronger and Nebraska returns to some semblance of its former glory.

As for the B1G placing two teams in the playoffs, I thought it very likely a few weeks back. But the second team was a one-loss Michigan along with conference champ Ohio St. Now, it is very likely that the Buckeyes do not play in the CCG. If Penn St. wins out, what will the selection committee do? Although Penn St. will have two losses, the Nittany Lions have a victory over Ohio St. along with a conference championship. IMO, the selection committee cannot take Ohio St. over Penn St: conference championships and head-to-head victories mean something. The Buckeyes playoff chances may well rest upon Washington losing again or Penn St. losing in the CCG.

The B1G tried to "balance" the conference before adding Rutgers and Maryland. Michigan and MSU were in a different division then Ohio St. and the conference had a bunch of cross-over rival games so traditional rivals would still play despite being in different divisions. That was scrapped in favor of a geographic model; hard to blame the conference for that. All the current ranked teams have had cross-over games against the better teams in the other division. Wisconsin played both Ohio St. and Michigan. In other words, I haven't identified any pattern to cheat the system.

Agreed. What I do think made a difference was the additional teams and having a conference Championship game had a major effect across the conference. It has increased competition on all levels.

Truthfully, this model is no different than the SEC Conference model and their two divisions..

I don't care if Ohio St gets in or not. I want Washington to lose out. It boggles my mind when people turn into conference cheerleaders. I like the P12, I think in general the football played in the conference is underrated nationally. Other than my team I'm not going to turn into some bandwagon team because they are in the same conference.

Back when Oklahoma and Nebraska were in the Big 8 and playing for conference and national championships, I would cheer for OU to do well until they played Nebraska. A Husker loss against a highly ranked Sooner team seemed honorable and a victory against the Sooners was made all the more sweet. An OU victory in a bowl game also seemed to make a difference in Nebraska's final poll rankings for the same reasons.
