Taysom is an ok running back.

A couple of overarching thoughts.

First, I consider it a duty to be the kind of fan players would want to be playing for. If they're wearing the Y and they're on the field, they have my rabid and undying support. It frustrates me to see fans turn on their starting quarterback, especially given the support and affection shown to him just a year ago. Given all the players go through (and Taysom in particular), they deserve better fans than what we are giving them.

Second, I'm not sticking my head in the sand. There are some serious accuracy issues. Perplexing ones, at that-- Taysom was never going to be the reincarnation of Peyton Manning, but he's had some great throwing performances over the years too, and it's startling to see the passing game struggle as it has.

Even so, it's not hard to see what the coaches are thinking and why Taysom has their unwavering support. Problems on the offensive side are abundant-- we're dredging the depth chart to field an O-line that was suspect to begin with, and we lost our two best receivers from last year. If the entire machinery of the offense is clicking and working together, I think you want a guy like Tanner over a guy like Taysom. But if you know the whole works is capable of breaking down-- if you're not sure you can trust your receivers to consistently get open, or your line to hold blocks-- then you absolutely favor the QB who is a weapon whenever everything else is falling apart.

This must have been a much more obvious call at the beginning of the year, when we thought of Taysom being at least as accurate as he was in the good stretches of 2014 and even 2015. Even with the way the passing game has struggled, though, it's still reasonable to stick with Taysom. And in any event, I think fans remember Tanner Mangum with rose-colored glasses. He made a living of heaving the ball up to a spot where Matthews or Blackmon could go fight for it, and fight they did. It doesn't surprise me that Detmer, who seems to know a little bit about the footballs, thinks Taysom gives us the best chance of winning right now.

All in all, as long as Taysom's our guy, I'm going to be cheering like crazy for him to succeed. And when Tanner's turn comes, I'm going to be cheering like crazy for him, too.

Everything you said is fine, but the fact is that Tanner is going to be our starter for the next two years, and we are going to the same bowl no matter what. Our best chance to have a great season in the near future is to do it on the back of an excellent quarterback and if that is going to happen it will be with Mangum. It is time to develop next years starter, at least to get some reps and more experience. We obviously should see quite a bit of that next week.

I can see why it would piss off fans that he's not at least going through the motions by calling timeouts at the end when BYU was running out the clock and only up 2 TDs. It sends a pretty clear message to the team that you think they suck so bad that you just prefer the game end rather than give them 2 extra minutes to try to pull off a miracle.

Saturday’s Nippert crowd of 37,522 included a large contingent of blue-clad BYU fans. The Provo, Utah-based Cougars essentially are a national brand, and BYU fans were about the only ones left for the final minutes Saturday.

I'll provide my thoughts because I'm vocal in the "Mangum should get more playing time, possibly 50% or more" camp.

My desire to get Mangum more PT has nothing to do with:

• Which QB gives us the "best chance of winning right now". That was my desire at the beginning of the year and even up through the Boise state game. After the Boise state game, BYU was likely going to end up 8-4, or 7-5 regardless of which QB was playing. After the Boise State game, my focus as a fan switched from "winning right now" as the most important priority to preparing for next year.
• Which QB I think is better overall, or which QB I think is better within the current constraints of the team (receiver issues, o-line issues,etc.). Because I'm agitating for Mangum to get more PT doesn't mean I think he is better than Hill; it's because I want him to get experience now. In other words, rose-colored glasses are a non-issue. If Daffy Duck were the heir apparent for BYU next year I would agitate for him to get more PT at the expense of Hill's PT at this point in the season.
• Not "supporting" Taysom. What does supporting a QB as a fan even mean? I'm not booing Taysom when he takes the field. I'm not hoping he throws INTs, I'm not hoping he gets sacked, and I'm certainly not hoping he gets injured.

I wish Taysom Hill all the success he can have in his post-BYU life. But he won't be at BYU next year and I want to prioritize The-Guy-That-Will-Be-At-BYU-Next-Year's training and experience over Taysom playing for "joie du jeu".

Taysom Hill has been dreadful at QB this year. There are other problems on offense, but he can't even make basic passes. Hill misses guy's by so far that when the ball comes out the WR and defense just stop and watch it sail out of bounds. It really takes the fun out of watching the game because the offense stalls due to bad QB play on probably 60% of the drives.

Not that the receivers are great, but why would you run great routes or fight press coverage to have a guy throw a ball behind you and out of bounds?

I'm too lazy to check stats, but I'd assume Taysom's throwing is as bad as it has been at BYU in a very long time.

Losing is one thing, especially with a whole new staff and scheme, but the decision to play Hill leaves me with very little faith Sitake is a great coach.
