Spent 4 months in Cincy on my mission. I enjoyed the people, but the race riots that occured while I was there was sad.

As far as the streets go, one person described it well. The streets were put where the Cowboys had chased the Indians.

After my exile from the Sacramento mission I spent my remaining time as a missionary in the newly formed Cincinnati mission, not many people knew or cared about Mormonism there. In fall of 1998 my companion and I had found a guy who seemed interested, he was really cool and had us over 5-6 times for discussions and dinner even forgetting to turn the TV off during Monday night football. Terry the investigator worked for the UC athletic department in some capacity and had been complaining often about how awful their season was going, they were either winless or only had 1-2 wins on the year. Friday right before Halloween we went over and my companion had been dying to try this new method one of the ZL's had told us about where you force the investigator to kneel with you and pray right then asking for an answer. I never liked the idea and really didn't want to do it with our guy who was cool to hang out with, but we get to the appointment and my companion leads in with this awesome new approach. Terry kneels down and things are actually going pretty well, he is praying and asking if the BoM is true and if he should get baptized. Then he takes a long pause and says in all sincerity "God, please give me a sign by not letting the Cats lose to Miami tomorrow. Amen" (It was Miami (OH) not Miami Hurricanes, so we thought that maybe HF would have our back on this one). After my stunned companion realizes what has happened Terry asks us if we want to go to the game the next day, that he can get us tickets and food and take care of it all. I figure that since we are kind of challenging God it would be rude if we didn't at least attend, but my companion says we can't. Saturday we are mindlessly wandering around town trying to street contact and my companion is stressed out of his mind, I think having this prayer thing work he thought was his ticket to moving up from DL to ZL. Sometime in the afternoon we started asking people what radio station UC was broadcast on, we had to ask like 20 people before one even had a possible thought of what it was. We hustled back to our car and tuned the radio to the AM station awaiting our miracle. After finding the station with a signal for the game we sat in a state of something between despair and depression as we learned the score was Miami a lot, I think 35 or so, to Cincinnati 0. We drove to White Castle and ordered enough crappy hamburgers to kill an average person and listened to the final 4-5 minutes of the game, me making sarcastic comments about how God was going to intervene at any moment and make this work, which didn't appear to help the mood of my companion. I don't remember how many Miami (OH) ended up with that day, but I do remember how many the mighty Bearcats ended with 0!

Surprisingly Terry still had us over for the next couple of weeks until I was transfered to a different area, but he took prayer at face value and was more interested in just chatting us up and hanging out than learning about the church.

The spelling proficiency probably didn't help either.

I actually spell words wrong on occasion on purpose so JL can comment on something and be right.

I enjoyed HFN's story immensely. It reminded me of when Gary Sheide went down with a shoulder injury before halftime of BYU's first ever bowl game (Fiesta Bowl 1974). During the break, the network interviewed President Kimball, and I was very bummed. 'Why isn't he in the locker room healing Sheide? Think of the missionary opportunity if he ran back onto the field to the amazement of all, not to mention a BYU win!" My views on theology and the efficacy of prayer in medical situations have evolved a bit since then, although the conclusion I reached that afternoon (that the Almighty doesn't give a crap about football) remains unchanged.

“Honestly we’re looking for revenge, they try to kill you with kindness,” said Bearcat junior safety Carter Jacobs. “When we went in there they gave us these goodie bags when we walked in and try to give us shaving cream and stuff like that to make us feel like we’re at home, but I’m looking for revenge because I know it was just a big slap in the face to us.”
