My memory is very hazy, but I think Jake told BYU he was leaving in December and would be back two years later (missing two seasons). But then he changed his start date to a couple of months earlier and, on his mission, shortened his stay by two months, enabling him to enroll at the start of the season BYU had understood he was going to miss. This information was conveyed way too late, although I'm open to the possibility of a screw-up in the FB office. My guess is communication was pretty lousy on both sides; at least both sides ultimately took the high road and didn't blame the other, unlike fans, who are happy to pick up the cudgel on such matters.Originally posted by Katy Lied View PostWho gets to change their mission term and come home 4 months earlier? But he served 22 months, not 20.

I wonder if there is an official policy or if it is up to the mission president. One of my sons asked about going home two months early in order to re-enroll in time for Fall Semester. He was told he could go home one transfer early but not two. Transfers are every 6 weeks. One transfer early wouldn't get him home before the start of classes. As a result, he had to reapply to the university since he was past his deferment. And since he is in a lock-step program, many courses that he needs to take are not offered Winter Semester. Essentially, he will "miss" three years of college instead of two. All because the mission application has an earliest day you can start a mission but not a "I need to start my mission by this date so it doesn't mess up my academic planning". It happened to his brother as well as he was hoping his mission would start before the beginning of Fall Semester but received an October report date. He went to BYU before his mission so it's not as big of an issue.Originally posted by creekster View PostI came back three months early. At my request. Honorable release. Of course, he could have just left this mission. Similar thing happened to me, costing me an extra year due leaving in September. I didn't ask to come home early, though because they got me out as soon as I was available (finished Basic Training two weeks before MTC report date).Originally posted by Paperback Writer View PostI wonder if there is an official policy or if it is up to the mission president. My experience has been just the opposite. Of course having a birthday in April probably helped. I left and got back at the beginning of August.Originally posted by Copelius View PostSimilar thing happened to me, costing me an extra year due leaving in September. Also, when I went to basic training and AIT, I was able to transition from basic training to AIT and catch-up with a class already in progress so that I could graduate in time to make it home about a week before that fall semester.

I am not sure how my request was approved. Being the assertive type, and believing, like Falafel, that no one could force me to stay, I made an appointment with my MP and told him I needed to leave 2+ months early in order to take advantage of a scholarship offer form a non-Church school that would not be there for me the following year. My family having little means made the offer very important to me. The thing is, I didn't really ask, I just sort of told him this is how it had to be for me. He said he would need to seek approval from SLC. A week later he called me and gave me a discharge date at a transfer that was between 3 and 4 months prior to the end of my mission. It was a bit earlier than I had wanted, actually, but I couldn't really complain. So it can certainly happen. But I have always suspected that my MP was secretly happy to be done with me. I can actually be a pain in the butt, I am told, from time to time.Originally posted by Paperback Writer View PostI wonder if there is an official policy or if it is up to the mission president. .PLesa excuse the tpyos.

Ha. A who served the shortest mission measuring contest. Like the preexistence some of us were more valiant than others. My MP asked, nay pleaded, with me to stay an extra month and half. The mission needed me! I did ask for one favor, that I could call my non-mo dad and let him know I would be staying, serving, and inspiring young missionaires awhile longer.

It's ok. There will be balance by the "who served the longest" stories. Kiss ups vs. quitters as CJ might say.Originally posted by Art Vandelay View PostHa. I extended, but that's because the MP told me I needed to stay longer because I was slower than the other missionaries.Originally posted by Art Vandelay View PostHa. These problems could have been avoided with better family planning.Originally posted by Paperback Writer View PostI wonder if there is an official policy or if it is up to the mission president. I entered the MTC as early as they would let me - late August - but didn't get released until late September. I didn't re-enroll at the BYU until January.Originally posted by Copelius View PostSimilar thing happened to me, costing me an extra year due leaving in September.
