It's always nice to see BYU fans and Funk come together to agree about how terrible the Utes are. #BuildingBridges"They're good. They've always been good" - David Shaw.
Well, because he thought it was good sport. Because some men aren't looking for anything logical, like money. They can't be bought, bullied, reasoned, or negotiated with. Some men just want to watch the world burn.

What did all those conference championships BYU won in the WAC and MWC get BYU?Originally posted by mpfunk View PostNot everyone is USC, not everyone has the national championship or failed season mentality. Let's be honest, there are a handful of teams that are actually teams that are legit national title contenders. Utah and BYU are not among these teams. A season isn't over if you are out of the national championship race for the large majority of schools. Conference championships mean something. Utah is still very much in the Pac-12 race. The season is far from over. Playoffs were never happening for this Ute team.
The problem with BYU is that once they lose that first game, they don't have conference championship to play for. Will donate kidney for B12 membership.

I understand the sentiment but you are promoting a dying mentality. The BCS era was the beginning of the end for the prestige of a conference championship or a bowl game invite. The playoffs is another step further down that line. Im not saying it is totally devoid of meaning, but how proud are Baylor and TCU of their conference championship from last year? Who won the ACC or the Big 10 the year Auburn won the national championship? who cares, really? It doesn't matter that much. My original point was simply to point out that the relative value differential between what a P5 team is playing for and what an independent is playing for (notre dame included) once they are out of the playoff race is pretty nominal these days. it may be better to play for a conference championship than not, but not that much better anymore. 20 years ago, absolutely. Today, not so much.Originally posted by mpfunk View PostNot everyone is USC, not everyone has the national championship or failed season mentality. I agree with everything you said about only a handful of teams ever really being in contention on an annual basis. that is why i originally said that the "access to the playoffs" argument against independence was always dumb.Fitter. Happier. More Productive.

This isn't basketball, wins still count more than "quality" losses when only four teams make the playoffs. Michigan State has a better win than anything Notre Dame has done, and they're also undefeated, unlike Notre Dame.Originally posted by TripletDaddy View Postgood point. in that case, alabama should be ranked higher than notre dame.....
The point is more arguable if we're discussing Alabama. Wins against Temple and Navy don't count for much.Part of it is based on academic grounds. Among major conferences, the Pac-10 is the best academically, largely because of Stanford, Cal and UCLA. “Colorado is on a par with Oregon,” he said. “Utah isn’t even in the picture.”

My only objection to a 16 team playoff is that it may result in a 1-game reduction of the regular season. If we still get 12 regular season games, I don't really see any downside.Last edited by Green Monstah; 11-04-2015, 02:08 PM.Jesus wants me for a sunbeam.

If there is a 16 game playoff there will no doubt be an 11 game season. FCS teams have an 11 game schedule. But lets face it, not having a 12 game schedule essentially means dropping the FCS team the majority of FBS teams play every year. No big loss (unless you are USC, UCLA, or ND).Originally posted by Green Monstah View PostMy only objection to a 16 game playoff is that it may result in a 1-game reduction of the regular season. How big is too big? Or is it possible to have a playoff that is too big?Originally posted by Green Monstah View PostMy only objection to a 16 team playoff is that it may result in a 1-game reduction of the regular season. If we still get 12 regular season games, I don't really see any downside.

Dropping a game would mean a huge financial hit for most programs, all to benefit 16 teams (and the tv sponsors, NCAA, etc.). That's a lot to extract from the remaining 100 or so FBS teams.Originally posted by USUC View PostIf there is a 16 game playoff there will no doubt be an 11 game season. That's what makes teams avoid playing quality teams in the non-conference. Expand the playoffs and playing big games wouldn't be nearly as risky.Originally posted by Paperback Writer View PostI'd rather have three months of meaningful football than one-month of playoffs. Winning a big game during the regular season and a team still has championship hopes; lose it and those hopes are probably gone. That's what makes the regular season exciting and meaningful.
