Typically you had to either win your district or come in second with no more than 2 losses to make the playoffs. They have since expanded to 16 teams, which is over half of all Class A schools. So naturally a few teams with losing records make the playoff every year which seems ridiculous. -
That is my view as well, I like the current format. However, in an 8-team playoff, I like the idea of P5 conference champions getting a playoff invite if they win a CCG. That would also leave room for three wildcard teams. On the other hand, there could be instances of two undefeated teams playing in a CCG and the loser knowing that they will get a playoff bid win or lose. It would be akin to 1970 #1 Nebraska against #2 Oklahoma with the loser knowing that they would still make the playoffs and possibly win the national championship. That's what made that game so great - knowing that a team had to win to claim the national championship. 8 is great, but it's not perfect. With 8 teams you could make all 5 P5 champs auto qualifiers, then have the top G5 as an auto-qualifier, with 2 at-large spots. That's probably the best, most realistic thing that we can possibly hope for.Originally posted by Jeff Lebowski View Post

In a perfect world, we would need 16 teams in the playoff so that every conference champion would have an auto-bid. Teams would still argue about not getting an at-large spot, but it wouldn't be as big of a deal because everyone would know that if you win the conference then you are in. But we don't live in a perfect world, so we will never have 16 teams, so 8 is the best option.Comment
