Is Brian Johnson LDS? Did he join up while he was at the U? He could do the job.

Nobody has ever done this at BYU. You're crazy.Originally posted by Topper View PostIt makes no difference to me who leads the BYU football program if the program wins big and important games.
For a man to be the BYU football coach, he must
(a) defeat Utah more often than not;
(b) go to a bowl game 9 out of 10 seasons;
(c) once a decade go to a bigger bowl game, such as a BCS or NY6 bowl game;
(d) have an average ranking in the Top 25, and a Top 10 ranking once a decade;
(e) have winning record every season.
I don't expect a BYU coach to win a national championship, or even play in the playoffs. Until BYU is in a P5 conference, that is unreasonable.
Too much went wrong this season to evaluate as an outsider. However, the results should not be considered acceptable, and TH should know enough to evaluate if (a) anybody should go, and (b) what his alternatives are.When a true genius appears, you can know him by this sign: that all the dunces are in a confederacy against him.

I agree. I'd be happy with another National Championship and I'd definitely be pleased with another Heisman winner while we're at it.Originally posted by SeattleUte View PostNobody has ever done this at BYU. Lavell did.
He won the NC, so I credit him with a "bigger bowl" and went to and won the Cotton Bowl.
He had perhaps at least two, if not three or four top ten finishes, and outside of one or two seasons in the 1970s, he had a winning record. He most definitely had a winning record against Utah.
Somebody else can run the numbers for how many seasons he finished in the rankings."Guitar groups are on their way out, Mr Epstein."
Upon rejecting the Beatles, Dick Rowe told Brian Epstein of the January 1, 1962 audition for Decca, which signed Brian Poole and the Tremeloes instead.

Did LaVell go to a bowl game 90% of his seasons at the helm?Ain't it like most people, I'm no different. We love to talk on things we don't know about.

He had 12 seasons ranked in the top 25. He had 3 top ten finishes. He wouldn't have satisfied your bowl game 9 out of every 10 years, but if bowl games were the same back then as they are now he probably would have gone to a bowl game each year from 1974 to 2000 when he retired.Originally posted by Topper View Post\

No. But in this era, anybody with a winning record gets to go to a bowl game. LaVell was bowl eligible in all but two of his 29 seasons.Originally posted by falafel View PostDid LaVell go to a bowl game 90% of his seasons at the helm?τὸν ἥλιον ἀνατέλλοντα πλείονες ἢ δυόμενον προσκυνοῦσιν

There are more bowls now. Since you get a bowl game nearly every time you are a 6 win team, the better question is how many times did LaVell win less than six games?Originally posted by falafel View PostDid LaVell go to a bowl game 90% of his seasons at the helm?Dyslexics are teople poo...

HE was close and he created something from nothing. He had something like 21 out of 26 seasons in a bowl. And in the seventies, there weren't a proliferation of bowls. I believe one season he finished first in the WAC and had no bowl. Another season later he finished tied for first and had no bowl. In today's world, those teams go to bowls.Originally posted by falafel View PostDid LaVell go to a bowl game 90% of his seasons at the helm?"Guitar groups are on their way out, Mr Epstein."
