I don't get the hand wringing as it pertains to Sitake's recruiting ability. I know I didn't expect a big uptick in recruiting rankings. BYU is stuck with the hand it has been dealt. Kalani might achieve a slight uptick with poly players, but BYU already recruited pretty well in that demographic. As long as we are on the outside looking in with respect to conference affiliation, it is what it is. This is a problem that will continue to get worse over time and it has very little to do with Sitake's ability to recruit or lack thereof. The speed of the decline will be the true test of Kalani's ability to recruit.

UW finished at #4 in the AP poll after making it to the CFP. They have one of the best head coaches in the country and their team has one of the most promising trajectories anywhere. UW is a solid academic school and Seattle is a cool town. It wouldn't be my first personal choice, but I can easily see why he would choose to go there.Originally posted by Topper View PostMaybe too many collisions. It is difficult for me to understand why a college student would choose UW over Stanford. UW is very good and if Stanford is not on the table, then I can see why it would be attractive. BYU should be able to beat out UW for a local Utah kid. BYU should almost never beat out Stanford.

The first four were never coming here. I don't think we're going to win a ton of recruiting battles with Washington, USC, and Stanford. It's nice when we do, but I don't think that's realistic even with Kalani. Whittingham doesn't win that many against those teams either. The ones I"m more concerned about are Lolohea and Hola, I really thought those two would come.Originally posted by cougjunkie View PostActually yeah it does. Utah didn't go after a ton of instate kids. But they did land a BYU legacy in Unutoa, 2 four star corners (Johnson and Guidry), 4 star running back (Green), 4 star WR (Thompson). They have a top 30 class right now and sure we took some instate kids from them. But in addition to Unutoa, they landed Suguturaga, Pututau, and Michael Richardson. All kids BYU wanted. So yes, in state BYU did ok (top two kids were probably Lolohea and Tufele and we lost both, but cleaned up on the 2nd tier guys). But overall Utah kicked our ass. NOrmally I wouldn't care but Kalani came in preaching recruiting, that's what he does. We hired Ofahengaue, Ah You, Damuni, Mahe, for these specific reasons. They don't bring anything else to the table. But we are still losing kids.
Look at this year alone:
1. Jay Tufele- we landed 3 of his teammates, still chooses USC, we don't even make top 3.
2. Ty Jones- Attends school across the damn street, never get a sniff, Washington
3. Sione Heimuli-Lund- super close relationship with Reno Mahe, never gives us a chance.
4. Taylor Katoa- Again we never even make the discussion, USC.
5. Jordan Lolohea- sign his brother, he fits the criteria, was a BYU lean for awhile. Even Washington was suprised they landed him.
6. Levani Damuni- his uncle works at BYU, he has family all over the coaching staff. Stanford
7. Carson Terrell- This kid is a monster, chooses Utah State over UCLA. BYU doesn't make his final 3.
8. Mata Hola- picks Utah State, over BYU, Boise and Oklahoma state
Those are all top 11 in-state kids I just named. We didn't land 8 of them.
What would help us more than anything is for Lance Anderson to move on elsewhere so they don't have as much of an in with the LDS kids. Hard to pass up a Stanford education. I can't imagine it's a very fun place to go to school, however. Will donate kidney for B12 membership.

With missions and transfers this is all a big yawn for me now. I see positions of need were addressed (for the most part) so with that I am pleased."Either evolution or intelligent design can account for the athlete, but neither can account for the sports fan." - Robert Brault

Are you really asking this? If the kid didn't want to come, what are you going to do? Ty committed to Utah before Kalani was even here. Washington is an excellent school with one of the top five or six coaches in the nation, it would be a great place to go play.Originally posted by Topper View PostWhy in the world is our great fantastic recruiter incapable of swaying a Provo kid from changing his mind? It's not as if Stanford came calling. UW is a very good college, but it isn't Stanford. If he can't sway a local kid across the street, his reputation as a great recruiter may be overstated. Will donate kidney for B12 membership.

This class looks a lot better when you factor in the transfers."There is no creature more arrogant than a self-righteous libertarian on the web, am I right? Those folks are just intolerable."

That's where I'm at. I am hoping the RB from East will give us a power running game that we can contrast with some of the other guys like Riley Burt. I don't see all the doom and gloom. We're talking about 18 year old kids. I'd like to think our coaching staff is better at coaching up guys than the last one.Originally posted by Jeff Lebowski View PostThis class looks a lot better when you factor in the transfers. Will donate kidney for B12 membership.

We should usually get our asses handed to us by Stanford. Why would you state it wouldn't be a very fun place to attend? I have never heard a complaint from anybody attending there. One of my better friends, a BYU undergrad, Stanford Law grad loved it. If I could ever build two shrines, I'd build one to BYU sports and one to Stanford's academia, with a side hut for Cal Tech.Originally posted by The_Douger View PostThe first four were never coming here. Do you mean Jaylen Warren? I don't see that he has signed anywhere. I have heard rumors from multiple players and coaches that his academics made him a long shot to play D1 football this year.Originally posted by The_Douger View PostThat's where I'm at. Because I don't think it would be very fun to attend undergrad there as a young LDS person. Lance Anderson needs to go away and Stanford needs to start sucking again.Originally posted by Topper View PostWe should usually get our asses handed to us by Stanford. Are you doing this based on the concept of there not being enough of the opposite sex there? Have you spent any time on campus there?Originally posted by The_Douger View PostBecause I don't think it would be very fun to attend undergrad there as a young LDS person. This is, perhaps, the stupidest thing uttered on this august website. And that is including global cooling posts by BYU71.
