Defensively minded, but Tanner has no receivers whatsoever. No proven RB. We might see a lot of 18 adv. 14 type games, if we can grind out a few points. Gone is the aerial show.Originally posted by Green Monstah View PostI don't follow recruiting, but landing a couple of 4* guys, a bunch of 3* guys and the typical smattering of white dudes from the I-15 corridor doesn't seem all that bad to me."Guitar groups are on their way out, Mr Epstein."

We gotta stop this mission thing and let Utah carry that banner.Originally posted by byu71 View PostIt would be really nice if the 4* guys and 70% of the 3 stars weren't going on missions."Guitar groups are on their way out, Mr Epstein."

I'm choosing to mostly ignore your fatuity here and instead overwhelm you with so much data that you'll maybe, just maybe, realize that you have reams to read on this subject before you can contribute meaningfully to any conversation on this topic.

We have picked up a few pretty good players who didn't go. Williams, Canada, the tall receiverOriginally posted by Goatnapper'96 View PostThen likely they wouldn't be coming to BYU. The Environment giveth and the environment taketh away!
, the center, the warner brothers. I was thinking we were getting close to my 30% threshold. Did the really good safety go?

does this mean Kyle didn't want any of the top kids from Utah?Originally posted by cougjunkie View PostWe lost Mata Hola to Utah State
Brandon Smith to a Friday night offer from Cal
Jordan Lolohea to Washington.
Tyler Asemota to a partial track scholarship at ucla
Tufele dropped us last night but he was a pipe dream
And it hurts worse when Kyle is getting every kid (minus Tofa and Fautea) that he wants. This is the best Ute class on paper, maybe ever. Bryan Thompson 4 star wide receiver just signed as I was typing this
.I'm like LeBron James.

Actually yeah it does. Utah didn't go after a ton of instate kids. But they did land a BYU legacy in Unutoa, 2 four star corners (Johnson and Guidry), 4 star running back (Green), 4 star WR (Thompson). They have a top 30 class right now and sure we took some instate kids from them. But in addition to Unutoa, they landed Suguturaga, Pututau, and Michael Richardson. All kids BYU wanted. So yes, in state BYU did ok (top two kids were probably Lolohea and Tufele and we lost both, but cleaned up on the 2nd tier guys). But overall Utah kicked our ass. NOrmally I wouldn't care but Kalani came in preaching recruiting, that's what he does. We hired Ofahengaue, Ah You, Damuni, Mahe, for these specific reasons. They don't bring anything else to the table. But we are still losing kids.Originally posted by smokymountainrain View Postdoes this mean Kyle didn't want any of the top kids from Utah?
Look at this year alone:
1. Jay Tufele- we landed 3 of his teammates, still chooses USC, we don't even make top 3.
2. Ty Jones- Attends school across the damn street, never get a sniff, Washington
3. Sione Heimuli-Lund- super close relationship with Reno Mahe, never gives us a chance.
4. Taylor Katoa- Again we never even make the discussion, USC.
5. Jordan Lolohea- sign his brother, he fits the criteria, was a BYU lean for awhile. Even Washington was suprised they landed him.
6. Levani Damuni- his uncle works at BYU, he has family all over the coaching staff. Stanford
7. Carson Terrell- This kid is a monster, chooses Utah State over UCLA. BYU doesn't make his final 3.
8. Mata Hola- picks Utah State, over BYU, Boise and Oklahoma state
Those are all top 11 in-state kids I just named. We didn't land 8 of them.Last edited by cougjunkie; 02-01-2017, 12:49 PM.*Banned*

Maybe he likes the lifesttyle better at USU and has friends going there. That's why I picked USU over BYU and UCLA, I mean BYU and Utah.
Why do you think we miss out on these kids. P5?

Kalani still has a huge institutional disadvantage in the Honor Code. Taking into account transfers, I think we have a nice pipeline of talent coming in defensively. I'm a little worried about the O, but maybe the cupboard isn't as bare as it looks.Jesus wants me for a sunbeam.

I agree with this 100%.Originally posted by Green Monstah View PostKalani still has a huge institutional disadvantage in the Honor Code. We are going to build an extremely dominant defense. Offense is going to be serviceable. As I was thinking back to the Ty Detmer years...we didn't have world class skill players either, but they still won. I think we will be much better offensively this year than last year, because we have some guys coming in that are built for this offense. We are going to have small RB's that can hit the hole and go. We are going to have tall TE's (of which we had none). We will have the small white WR running fly routes.
Our biggest obstacle are:
1. Non P5 status.
2. Honor Code.
Those things are always going to hurt. And every year of independence #1 is going to get worse. If we had Nick Saban as our coach, these recruiting classes aren't going to get any better. When you have no shot at a national championship, it is what it is.
Saban couldn't sell a kid on a school where they can't drink or get laid without fear of being kicked out.

Generally, I agree with your premises as stated, but if you look at cougjunkie's liste of eight, most of those shouldn't have been influenced by those factors.Originally posted by The_Tick View PostI agree with this 100%.

Kalani sold us on his ability to win recruiting battles and in his first full year, they didn't win those battles. Losing Legacy BYU kids or a player across the street from BYU?"Guitar groups are on their way out, Mr Epstein."
