He was open because the dude has wheels.Originally posted by ERCougar View PostFun game to watch. That last td run...goodness.
Two questions: 1) running game--we just weren't getting many holes. Is the uconn d line decent or is this a legit concern against Texas? 2) Taysom had all day to throw. I can't imagine him having that much time the rest of the year. So I guess my one (little) criticism would be him holding on to the ball so long. Tough to tell on tv if receivers were open and he didn't take any stupid sacks--I just wonder if this will be a problem down the road.

Mama, I'm in love with a boy from Idaho and I don't care who knows it.
My goodness. That first half was almost perfect from Hill. Second half wasn't really bad either. He would have had 350/130 if not for penalties taking away yards. Can't complain.
I know that second half was a bit of a downer but finishing off that last drive and holding UConn to 0 points on two trips inside the 10 at the end was great. We were missing 5 starters. We traveled across the country to play on the road. We were whistled for 15 penalties for 150 yards. And we won by 25 and held the home team to 10 points. I'll take that any day.
Now for what impressed. The defense shut down UConn's rushing game Just 71 yards. That's amazing. Preator and Davis will be very good and we have the DB position locked down for the next couple years. Bronson is a beast off the edge. His size takes away that half of the field even if he isn't great in coverage. But his length makes several passes impossible. Pass protection was amazing. Taters had all day to throw. Koroma did work. So impressed with him. We also have great tackles in Wesley and Lapuaho. I know some weren't as happy with the run blocking but BYU still ran for over 200 yards at 5+ YPC. Aside from one little hiccup in the RZ I thought Anae called a great game. Same for Howell. We got a bit more creative which led to some pressure and sacks in the 2nd half.
Now for the bad. Penalties. Lots of bad calls by terrible refs. But lots of boneheaded plays too that kept drives alive and negated positive plays and momentum. That can't happen against Texas. Ball security. Those fumbles can't happen. Those weren't even big hits, just not taking care of the ball to the ground. Didn't care for the red zone playcalling on the missed FG by Samson. Two fades and then swing option to Lasike. Boo. But by far the worst thing about this game was our special teams. There has got to be someone on that campus that can kick the ball through the uprights and into the end zone on kickoff. Arellano was not good. Also kick coverage was shaky. Special teams deserves a lot of attention and work this week."Nobody listens to Turtle."-Turtlesigpic

I'm feeling a lot better about things.
I just finished watching the second half, because I had to work tonight.
We plugged away in the running game, there were a lot of good holes there. Taysom made a few poor reads, but that's really the only bad thing he did. Really encouraged by the passing game. Could truly be deadly with the guys we are getting back later. We'll need Blackmon and Williams if we are to have a chance against Texas.
I'm encouraged by the secondary. We look to have legit depth there. I think the front 7 need to toughen up a bit, but they did well in the running game and I liked the blitz packages we ran. I think Davis and Preator are going to be good players.
Feeling pretty good about things. Will donate kidney for B12 membership.

I like Mitch Matthews. He just makes it look easy when the ball goes his way. Lasike is a brute as well- love his game. Our kick coverage was a mess - hopefully that gets sorted out, along with our holding issues."I'm anti, can't no government handle a commando / Your man don't want it, Trump's a bitch! Flystripper is easily the coolest apostate on this board next to HBCoug. That guy was hilarious in this thread.
That was a fine way to start the season. Refs were awful, but I think we can count on a least one unsportsmanlike penalty against Leavitt every game for the rest of his career. Boy has got 'tude!

Lots of positives:
taysom: awesome, awesome, awesome! One specific thing that I liked was his ability to throw the ball. We already knew he could run but lots of chatter out of camp about his inability to make short throws. Taysom threw some nice balls, some of them into tight spaces. I assume this ability has only improved now that he is married.
beat the Vegas spread despite suspensions to key players on both sides of the ball
O line with zero false starts in the game. Zero. That is a huge improvement.
only one sack and it was a cheap one.
bronco won a game he was supposed to win.
Davis is fast. Preator looks serviceable.
we escaped relatively injury free. In fact, initial reports don't list any injuries that will affect next week. Mitch Matthews said he sprained his jaw. Is Mitch married? If so, his wife is the only person that may be impacted by injuries from this game.Fitter. Happier. More Productive.

Our OL had some holds and weak personal foul calls. But they didn't have a single false start. It's pretty remarkable that BYU 15 penalties called and not a single one was a false start.
I think Jordan Leslie is going to be really good. Dude blocks downfield also. On Hine's TD he completely sealed off his guy. I can't wait to have everyone back."Nobody listens to Turtle."-Turtlesigpic
