        Predictions?

The first game of the year is often the most difficult. You have an entire spring session, fall camp and offseason of hype. Then, your first reality check.

I suspect BYU is simply better than UConn, but it is an Eastern away game and BYU has sometimes stumbled early in the year a la Virginia. I am my usual uncomfortable self. Nonetheless, if forced to predict, I would tend to think BYU would win by seven to ten points.
"Guitar groups are on their way out, Mr Epstein."

Upon rejecting the Beatles, Dick Rowe told Brian Epstein of the January 1, 1962 audition for Decca, which signed Brian Poole and the Tremeloes instead.

Pelagius does a sort on noise prediction thread for every game.

I'm starting to worry about UConn's Bradlee Van Peltesque QB. SJBH!

The seven to ten sounds about right to me. Vegas has us a plus 17. Vegas for some reason seems to have us overrated at the beginning of the year. I could be wrong, but Oklahoma might be the only opener in the last 8 years we covered the spread.

I believe Vegas on this one - I think we win by more than two touchdowns. In 2013 they ranked 122nd in rushing yards, 108th in points, and on defense gave up over 30 points a game. They lose five of last year's front seven - including the only two guys who had two or more sacks in an anemic pass rush. Their pass defense was porous and they juggled nine starting defenders trying to find the right guys (upside of that: Lots of returning experience, downside, they never really found the right guys).

This is a team that lost by solid margins Towson and Buffalo last year.

The flipside: They led Michigan for most of the game at home last year and Michigan barely pulled it out by 3 pts at the end. They beat a (mediocre) bowl team in Rutgers in the second to last game of the season. And Mullet Boy only started those last few games. So who really knows.

I think BYU is going to be ready for the opener this year though and I'm seeing something like a 31-17 win.

I could see that happening, but without Jamal, Kurtz and Blackmon, I don't see BYU's offense being as smooth as it might develop into down the road.

I'll be honest, I really don't care if it's by 1 point. I just want a win and to get thru this game healthy for Texas. My prediction (if Pelagius would get off his lazy ass) will likely be something close to your own (barring any unforeseen suspensions/reinstatements) but a win would do just fine.

BYU will have 3 hammers at RB in this game. Not dynamic, but tough, downhill runners who will wear down a bad defense.

Your first sentence says you believe Vegas on this one, BYU by 17. Your last sentence basically says you don't. You setting up to be right either way?
