  • Another season in the books

Goatnapper will wax philosophical about how it is unreasonable to expect more from BYU 's limited recruiting base. A counterargument.

BYU has the base to produce competent lines. Yet this season turned on the poor performance of the lines.

It lost to two bad teams, Virginia and Utah. Four years in a row.

The two marquee games were flops.

The only successful games were Texas And Houston.

Overall, the season should be viewed as a failure. Can Bronco get BYU to over the hump?

The season could have been successful if it had defeated one of the marquee games and defeated Utah. That is within BYU s ability. This is a second season where BYU fails to deliver.

I'm not sure how to feel about this season. 8-4 was above my prediction considering the schedule. And yet, I can't help but feel that we should be 10-2. Oh well, the season is essentially over after losing to VA.

I'll miss KVN and Hoffman. Love J Swag's future. I'm worried about Taysom's passing development, Anae's scheme, the WR corps, and the O line. It'll be nice to see a healthy defensive backfield next year.

I am worried about both lines because the school has not shown the ability to improve the lines quickly. DLines can improve more quickly than Olines.

I am also very worried about our receiver corps. We have not had a dependable tight end in many years, and nobody to replace Hoffman. We had a couple sign a few years ago who may be back from missions.

Hill's judgment in key game situations against top flight competition. He also is not a reliable passer.

Next year has more questions than answers. And BYU has had rather disappointing recruiting seasons the past couple of years.

BYU could succeed if the lines improve, Hill steadies and we find some reliable receivers. A tall order.

Blah blah blah the sky is falling, the end is nearing, Bronco can't coach/can't recruit, yards yadda yadda.

For the first time in a long time, we return a competent QB with experience who started every game the year before. Yes, Hill can improve but he threw for 2,600 yards and ran for 1,200 yards this year. With our line, that is an accomplishment.

We also return Jamaal, who when all is said and done may be the best RB in school history. We have two more years left of those guys.

Our line, for all their shortcomings, basically returns everyone and adds Tayo Fabojule who started for TCU and was All Big 12. Actually figuring out where everyone is going to play, and having them healthy will mean an improvement.

Marques Johnson had a very good game yesterday and with Bronson on one side and Peck on the other, I am not worried. Our DL will be absolutely fine. I am worried about out backers. Pikula and Fua are the only two I have confidence in. Hopefully Hinds can come back in good shape and contribute on one edge. You also hope some of the recruits (Warner, Cook, et al) can come in and help as well.

Our secondary should be solid too. Rob Daniel was a huge surprise. Bills will be back. Trammel and Johnson should be solid on the corners. Because of that, I wouldn't be shocked to see Davis move back to WR.

Our WRs are the biggest question mark going into next year. Kurtz should help replace Hoffmans production. Our passing game struggled when Matthews went down. Apo has struggled, but allegedly his shoulder has been banged up. Maybe an offseason to get healthy and he can contribute. I believe we also have some guys coming back from missions.

We lose some All-time BYU greats (KVN, Hoffman, Danny Sorenson) as well as some very good contributors (Hadley, Unga, Manumaleuna, etc) but the schedule gets much easier next year with every game looking very winnable. If you can't see that, go follow the PAC-12.

Weber is gone. Our O-line future looks great. Conversely, Utah State...

I feel like we saw some progress this year. The line improved as the year went on. Beating Boise was a big deal to me. Beating Georgia Tech was a big deal. Beating Texas was a big deal. Beating Houston was a big deal. We beat a lot of decent teams this year.

We're not where I'd like us to be yet, but we're getting closer. The Virginia loss was baffling and unacceptable, but I'm used to losing to Utah and while I was hopeful we'd get one of the two games against Wisky and ND, those are tough road games against good teams.

I think the defensive line will be fine. We have a lot of depth coming back and Marques Johnson was a monster yesterday. Plus, JonRhyheem Peoples should be in the rotation, and there's several guys off missions that should be in the rotation.

I think you're a bit of a negative nancy. This was a good year against this schedule. The only unacceptable loss was Virginia.

Sure the schedule is easier, which means they might win more but not be better.

Your argument is one of continuity. There is some truth to that concept, but BYU loses a lot of talent, and it doesn't seem BYU has the same level of acclaimed talent coming in to replace the talent lost.

I didn't see it, but that is not a very exciting schedule. Ten wins almost looks like a cake walk.

Continuity has more importance at some positions than it does at others. QB and OL are probably two of the more important positions to have that continuity.

I hope it makes a difference next year. We are shallow in the receiving corps, and poor receivers can make a QB look bad.
