Breaking Badger: BYU vs. Wisconsin

We generally match up well against big physical teams that like to pound the football. However I am not sure we have the d-line depth that we did in years past. Like you said we may see Marques and Eathyn in the middle with Bronson on one side and Peck on the other. Our speed will keep Wiscy from getting to the edge and take away the long runs. But we will need Beck and Unga to come up big in this game. I feel more comfortable with Hadley and Unga in the middle and Fua and KVN on the outside. I also expect Sorenson to come down in the box a lot for this game.

I thought they said Hadley was going to be outside again? Maybe that changed since Jorgensen's season ending surgery was announced.

Like Sizzle said, this is going to be a game where the defense has to play sound football. They have to maintain gap control against Wisconsin's big zone blocking scheme. They like to block down and allow the back to find a hole. We can't let their linemen to get to the second level either and take out Beck or Unga. The defense can't let the line get inside their pads either. They have to maintain separation to shed blocks quickly. It's going to be a difficult test. Ludwig will also throw in a jet or fly sweep and they like to do PA off of that too from what I have seen. They have had monster plays with Gordon on the jet sweep. As Sizzle and CJ mentioned I am hoping our speed at LB and ability to play sideline to sideline negate these big plays and that we can stretch running plays out and fill holes. PoVey/Leavitt and Daniel are going to have to get off blocks or recognize run and not get ran off on a route to make plays from their position too. And Sorenson and Bills are going to have to step up big time.

I really think this may be one of those games where we have to outscore them. I'm generally not worried about our defense especially against the run, but I am worried this game.

I definitely agree on feeling better with Hadley and Unga in the middle opposed to Beck. My guess is we see a lot of linebacker rotation. I also worry about our DL depth, and think that may be the difference.

Like I said, Sorenson in the box worries me because it likely means man coverage over the top without safety help. Our corners deserve credit as they've been solid for the majority of the year, but I don't like them matched up in one on one coverage, especially against Jared Abbrederis. He's averaging 17 YPC this year with 6 TDs. As a team though, their run game is just filthy. 344 carries, 2,296 yards, 26 TDs and a 6.7 per carry average. I don't know how you don't commit to stopping the run bringing Sorenson down and leave your corners in single coverage.

Against Wisconsin you have to sell out to stop the run. They're too good at it and they're likely not going to stop trying to run the ball. We could sellout and still not stop it. Lots of others have failed stacking the box. This is also why their jet sweep with Gordon has been so devastating. They get everyone inside and boom he's around the end and gone. I'd much rather leave Sorenson inside and take my chances against Stave. He's not overly impressive and will make poor throws here and there.

Amen. When I first got involved on BYU sports boards (circa 2000), I cringed at how lots of BYU fans presented themselves on other school's boards (Hellooooooo, YzGuy!). Happily, YzGuy was deflowered a few years later and seemed pretty normal after that. But what, then, of so many others who feel the need to defend every slight or insult, and to do it in the lamest way possible? landpoke should open a charter school devoted to proper opposing fan behavior. Actually, there's nothing proper at all about landpoke, but he knows how to lay it down.

I totally agree. They represent a small part of the fan base, but there are always people, some Ute fans for example who have shit for brains and act like they do represent the majority of the fan base.
