Miami Sanctions coming today

The NCAA really had no choice they botched this investigation from the beginning.

The lead investigator was hooking up with one of Miamis associate ADs.

Then you have Nevin Shapiro refusing to cooperate with the NCAA. Because the NCAA was unable to get anywhere with him they start talking to his defense attorney and they end up paying the defense attorney for documentation linking him to the Miami players.

They screwed this entire thing up and I am not sure they had any other choice but to go lite on the penalties or face serious retribution from Miami.

I am serious about this at what point do Oregon fans become tired of having a good team but one not good enough to win a NC? Or are the flashy uniforms enough to offset that?

It seemed you were just copying Triplet's smack, reinforcing my idea that people just copy success.

As to your question I don't really know the answer. I am new money when it comes to Oregon, since enrolling in January of 2001 I've really not known anything other than the Ducks being a good to really good team (2004 Ludwig excused). The people that I sit next to for the last 12 years of season tickets have had tickets since 1965, when I talk to them about getting over them hump the husband, who turned 80 at the Cal monsoon, said to me "We are so far over the hump you can't even understand".

I think if the Ducks don't get one in the next couple that a few things will happen, 1-they will drop off like Virginia Tech did, from being a team that challenges nationally to a team that is 10-40 every year. Recruits are still buying into climbing the mountain, I don't think that lasts forever. 2-A big part of the bandwagon fan base that has been growing every year starts to wither away. 3-The uniforms die away. Right now Oregon is still on an upward trajectory, from awful team, to bowl team, to consistently ranked team, to somewhat relevant nationally, to relevant nationally but can't win big game, to winning big bowl games. Right now the uniforms, system, hype is all still cool and is seen as proof of growth. If the next 1-4 years don't yield the big result teams stop copying Fast-Hard-Finish, teams stop copying 14 different uniforms/helmets, teams start copying whoever the new VT/Oregon team is.

I am not a fan of the uniform thing but it has yielded undeniable success for Oregon (gear sales, notoriety, recruiting, a role in on field success, etc). Many schools have taken a cue from oregon in that they now regularly change uniforms. Baylor has gone as far as changing its uniforms and its offense, making no bones about it (and experiencing great success). While Oregon was not the first school in sports to do a throwback or alternate uniform, they clearly were the first to do it on a regular basis.

At this point, I am less interested in what Oregon's new uniform will be. That is their thing, they have established it as their "tradition," if you will, so no worries.

I think the more interesting standoff is among the traditional powers. Alabama, SC, Oklahoma, Penn State, Michigan, let's include the fertile recruiting ground of texas, as well.....are any of these programs going to budge? I just don't see it, but who knows. I intentionally omitted tOSU and Notre Dame because both of them have recently done ridiculous things to either their uniforms and/or their helmets.

Apparently, Nebraska has already "budged". Perhaps, Nebraska's one-game-a-season alternate uniforms (thank you Addidas) disqualifies the Huskers. I'll argue Penn State is in the process of "budging" and that's the one program that really needs alternate uniforms, IMO.

I don't think Oregon has to win a national title in the next few years to remain relevant. The Ducks now have the facilities, coaching, and proximity to recruiting talent to remain successful. A national title will certainly help but making the playoffs will be enough to continue to keep fan and media interest alive. Now if Stanford, Cal, USC, UCLA, and Washington all become ranked programs at the same time, perhaps the talent pool will be diluted enough to harm a team like Oregon.

In my view, what seperates the traditional powers is their abilty to rebound from a down cycle. Over the long haul, college football is cyclical - every progam suffers a lack of success - mostly due to poor coaching choices which can also result in poor recruiting. I recall times (multiple times) where USC was no longer a top program. When OU and Alabama had losing teams. When Michigan couldn't win a national title...wait, that's still the case...why does Michigan get a pass on that while Oregon does not? Right now the SEC is all the rage but I recall a time when Nebraska went 18-1-1 against the vaunted SEC.

They can't even pronounce Hurricane correctly down there, don't expect too much from them. The baseball field with the CF didn't look as bad.

I think it is awesome that Phil gets his own headset during games. I wonder if he has ever bitched at a coach for a play call.
