Barking Carnival: New Mexico St review
http://www.barkingcarnival.com/2013/...st-review-2013
QB
Now as Scipio noted, there's no way his long TD run goes much further than 5-10 yards against BYU or the better Big 12 defenses, however Ash's change of direction and top end speed are decisively above average.
[...]
OL
Texas Inside Zone run game was nearly useless most of the night save for drawing attention away from other features of the offense except when complemented by the threat of an Ash keeper in the Zone Read, or at the end of the game against a tired defense with Bergeron and Overstreet.
So this offensive line is still struggling mightily to blow open interior lanes against...well, anyone really. Texas didn't run a great deal of Power-O so I'm not sure exactly where we are in regards to that concept.
[...]
Defense
In general, we've mostly gone back to the philosophy of 2011, which is a tremendous relief. By that, I mean that our schemes and approach are geared around playing "bend don't break" Palms/Quarters defense mixed with extremely liberal usage of Fire Zones which are our drive-killers. It's a great approach to defensive football and obviously had considerable success in 2011. New Mexico St. could not handle it, I honestly doubt that BYU will do much better.
DL
Malcom Brown is getting penetration while Jeffcoat prevents the playside B gap from being blown open. On the backside, Whaley stays in the A-gap and keeps Hicks entirely free while Reed blows up the whole play from the backside.
Our DT's completely controlled this game and thoroughly dominated New Mexico St...as it should be.

Just don't let the internal emo-Mack out just yet though, let's see what we make of BYU's defense up in the elevation at Provo first."If there is one thing I am, it's always right." -Ted Nugent.

Yeah I just don't see it either. Last week UVA crossed midfield once in the first half which resulted in the 54 yard FG before the half and then were held to less than 20 yards a drive in the 2nd half. If the offense/ST don't put the defense in such shitty positions last week UVA would have had 5 points.Originally posted by smokymountainrain View PostNo kidding. Texas isn't putting up 40+ on BYU.
I think BYU has a lot going for them. They're pissed about the game last week. It's the home opener and should be rocking. Hoffman is probable and he is a game changer. I think Mack is a good enough coach to not let the team look past us, but they do have Ole Miss coming the following week. This game is going to be much closer than any Texas fan expects."Nobody listens to Turtle."-Turtlesigpic

Indy Coug has already intimated that Taysom Hill's career will likely mirror Jim McMahon's career (because they both had a bad game at some point during their college experience), so expect some big things in Week 2.Originally posted by smokymountainrain View Postlol @ the fact you think BYU can score 25 points. Old people are awesome.Fitter. Happier. More Productive.

I think it's probable after watching their defensive snaps vs. NMSU. We could very well wear them down with some physicality and drive the field. Ball security will be the deciding factor.Originally posted by Omaha 680 View PostI am very confident BYU will hold Texas to less than 30 points. The question is can we score more than 20?"I'm anti, can't no government handle a commando / Your man don't want it, Trump's a bitch! I'll make his whole brand go under,"

So much for BYU's high-altitude advantage...
http://espn.go.com/blog/big12/post/_...as-for-byu-airElevation masks prepare Texas for BYU air
Cedric Reed will not explain the masks. To do so would require revealing what he considers confidential information. Not gonna happen.
“The masks? Uh, I can’t really comment on those man,” the Texas defensive end said Monday. “They definitely helped. I can’t really comment much on them, though. Secret weapon. That’s classified right there.”
Luckily, Reed’s teammates and coaches were a bit more forthcoming. Texas players used elevation training masks during their workouts this summer to better prepare for the challenge of playing at BYU on Saturday.
BYU’s LaVell Edwards Stadium sits at an elevation of 4,630 feet. There are real challenges to playing there, and Texas was proactive in preparing for the test.

The silicone masks are designed to mimic the effects of high-altitude training and are essentially deconstructed gas masks. They reduce air flow, which improves lung capacity by forcing an athlete to inhale deeper breaths. The goal? To use oxygen more efficiently.
“We wore them to make sure we were in shape,” Texas defensive end Jackson Jeffcoat said. “They were the kind of thing that teaches us how to breathe with limited oxygen, because it was cut off.”
By achieving better efficiency, Texas players will have far better endurance in high-altitude settings. In fact, companies like Training Mask that sell them tout the mask’s ability to reduce workout times “from 60 minutes to 20 minutes” and improve endurance when playing at normal sea-level conditions as well.

There's that and there have been enough teams come into Provo and kick BYU's ass that I just don't see the altitude being a very significant advantage anyway. Seems to get plenty of talk, but it's overrated, IMO.Originally posted by Jacob View PostIt's funny to me to think that Provo is high altitude.I'm like LeBron James.
