While I generally think that individuals - not their alma maters - make their own success, there are a few schools where so many doors are opened for you that they should be viewed as essentially impossible to turn down. In the country I really think there are only a handful of such schools - almost all of which require giving up any hope of a pro career. Stanford is on the top of that very short list where you can keep the dreams of a pro career alive while ensuring amazing opportunities open up to you even if the NFL or NBA doesn't work out. Duke would be on there for basketball - and may actually be returning for football. And there are place like ND or Texas or Alabama where being on the football team opens up regional opportunities or positions with boosters. But Stanford is at the top of all those lists. It'd be real hard to encourage a kid to go to BYU when an offer from Stanford was on the table.Originally posted by mpfunk View PostI've said over and over again in this thread, I would never advise any kid to take an offer to Utah over Stanford. He just gave up one of the best opportunities that an DI athlete could have.
If my son was trying to take an offer to Utah or BYU over an offer to Stanford, I would have to seriously consider pulling a stunt like DJ Law's parents did today.
Even Uriah acknowledged on twitter that he was not making the smart decision.
Is Uriah LDS?

DJ Law now listed as a signee for the Utes.

He is also still listed as an official signee for Ole Miss.
Seriously a bizarre situation. As I lead this army, make room for mistakes and depression

It's a tough crowd, but if you can make it in CS, you can make it anywhere.Originally posted by byu71 View PostTake heart Topper. He said it elicited only a few.... I want you to know I wasn't one of them. I was interested in what you had to say. It's a big group here with varied opinions. Although a few of them like to hurt my feelings, it is a fun group anyway.
For LDS kids, other than Stanford, the Ivies, the Academies, Cal Tech or MIT, I can't see much trumping BYU. In short most kids won't have the option to go to those other institutions. That was my awkward way of saying that."Guitar groups are on their way out, Mr Epstein."
Upon rejecting the Beatles, Dick Rowe told Brian Epstein of the January 1, 1962 audition for Decca, which signed Brian Poole and the Tremeloes instead.

So it looks like BYU went 13-7 in head-to-head offers against the P12? Not bad.Originally posted by kccougar View PostAside from Mama, who else had a BYU offer but signed with a P12 school?"It's devastating, because we lost to a team that's not even in the Pac-12. To lose to Utah State is horrible." - John White IV

Good point. Martzen did a nice job with this year's class.Originally posted by The_Douger View PostSo, I feel like we had a good day today. I like the guys we signed today.
How do we keep Geoff Martzen around? He seems to have helped Bronco be able to "extend the fishing nets" a bit."Sure, I fought. I had to fight all my life just to survive. They were all against me. Tried every dirty trick to cut me down, but I beat the bastards and left them in the ditch."

"BYU is the place for me, I felt that the Lord prompted me to go." Lopa LeiatauaThis morning's SF Chronicle had an story about Stanford's expected class (can't find the online version), and mentioned Leiataua as a commit. But it went on to state, "One Stanford commit who might back out is defensive end Uriah Leiataua, who committed to the Cardinal in mid-January. He is having second thoughts after an official visit to BYU over the weekend, he told the Cardinal Sports Report. 'I'm confused about (my decision) right now,' he said." I'm very pleased he found himself delivered from the enemy which held him bound.Originally posted by USUC View Post
I understand why one would choose Stanford over BYU. But those who don't know why a person might, on occasion, choose BYU over Stanford or any other school have missed out on some really great experiences. I'm hopeful Uriah is in for some of those.
