I went the rounds both with a Seminary teacher and a Bishop over the matter when my kid chose not to attend BYU after getting accepted.
I tried, without any success, to get my daughter to attend Purdue. She had a presidential scholarship there and it is a great engineering school. When some folks in the ward heard that I was pushing my daughter to go to some other school than BYU they couldn't understand why. When they questioned me about it I said simply that Purdue is a damn good engineering school and I wanted what is best for my daughter. They seemed liked they couldn't understand my logic. She instead went to BYU, got a pretty good education, but a great husband. I guess I am happy she went to BYU after the fact.

One thing I do get a lot in my Southern California ward is that BYU is the best option for every single LDS kid, and that if they get in they should go there (I haven't seen so much of the "should go" as in duty, but more as in "it is impossible that there could be a better choice"). I suppose you could infer the former from the latter. I was shocked one time when I was discussing college choices with someone and I said that the prospective student should pray about it, and someone else got very upset with me and told the kid that they didn't need to pray about it because BYU was an option.

You blew it. You should have listened to them.

No thanks. By failing to attend BYU I am now ineligible for any major callings, so it looks like a few more years in the primary. Hooray!

Regarding BYU's "purpose," you can't possibly argue that BYU has had a single, uniform purpose or set of unchanging purposes that has been carried out by unchangeable (and unchanged) policies, can you?
You and tens of thousands of Ute fans are right on this one. Brethren are wrong. Wait them out and it will go your way.

There is a big difference between believing God approves of the decisions the Brethren and believing what the Brethren do is the absolute best course of action in every situation. The former is what faithful Latter Day Saints believe and support, the latter is irrational and dangerous as it leads to impossible expectations and loss of faith when those expectations aren't met.

Ah, the tortured life of the uber-orthodox BYU grad.

I guess Bronco was right to hire Doman and start Riley, since Bronco works at BYU and the brethren approved his hiring. The brethren also really screwed up in hiring Crowton, too, or maybe they wanted to have a statutory rape party at BYU. Or every GA who has ever called a leader who ends up doing something he shouldn't do.

Besides, I never said the brethren were wrong WRT how they handled BYU. I'm just saying it might not be a bad idea to reexamine some policies. That certainly doesn't mean I've said they did anything wrong.

And furthermore, as DU Ute mentioned, sometimes the decisions made by the brethren turn out to have less-than-perfect consequences.

                • I'm Mormon.

                  My church owns a university.

I hate that university's sports teams.

                  *inner torture results*

I decide the church must be wrong for owning a university that plays sports.

First, this has nothing to do with BYU sports, it has to do with the education of LDS kids and what would be the best for them.

Second, my proposal would either not impact BYU sports or would actually benefit BYU sports, so you're obviously wrong there.

Third, since there would be no conflict between #2 and #3 above, there would be no conflict.

Fourth, I don't hate that University's sports teams. I grew up rooting for both the U and the Y. I was at the BYU-Miami game cheering like mad for the Y. Unfortunately, my support of the Y sports teams has waned somewhat since I discovered on-line sports message forums when I move away from Utah about 10 years ago, but I still cheer for BYU in many instances, I hope they represent my church well (which is the only relevant issue for how an LDS member should view BYU sports due to church affiliation/loyalty), and I certainly do not "hate that university's sports teams."

Of course, don't let any of the foregoing interfere with your stereotyping, name-calling, and superiority complex that helps push so many towards the direction outlined in my fourth point above.

                    • With the last few pages devoted to nothing more than a pissing match, I guess its safe to assume that Bronco aint goin nowhere.

Apparently Bronco, Doman, and Poppinga are meeting with Brayden Kearsley tonight. THat tells you that Both Bronco and Doman will be around next year. Absent? Weber.

I apologize that it devolved. I didn't realize that commenting on a thread discussing church strategies for dealing with academics in the same manner as BYU fans and in a way that had nothing to do with athletics would result in having my faith and devotion to leaders criticized because I'm an "ALUF."
