I'm pretty sure Star was a non-qualifier out of high school, in other words he couldn't have gone anywhere; it wasn't BYU-specific. After his time at Snow he was qualified and could have gone to the Y, but just chose to go to the U. Naturally, on cougarboard this is reported as either meaning that he couldn't get into the Y (not true, as Lebowski apparently confirmed above) or that Star and/or the BYU coaches recognized that he just wasn't intelligent enough to cope with BYU's academic rigors so despite the fact that he could have gone to the Y and would have preferred to go to the Y he recognized his own limitations and chose to go to the U. This is the sour grapes rationalization.

    • I can confirm that BYU is trying to get high achieving students. My wife used to work in the office that recruited them. I used to go to some of the tailgates they sponsored and talked with the administrators (people on admissions committee) and they were pretty straightforward about chasing high ACT kids. (If you want your kid to get into BYU, put them in an ACT prep class.)

I'm sure your daughter is everything you state plus a bag of chips. Also I left room in my statement for there to be some hot chicks at BYU.

A lottery would be random and unfair.

I would also point out that the idea that one has to be some kind of nerd or social introvert in order to get grades good enough to qualify for admission to BYU is nonsense. I also object to Shaka's implication that smart girls can't be hot. That is sexist and offensive. On behalf of my beautiful, athletic, socially active, and highly intelligent daughter:

At least we know where the nerve was and I don't blame you if you thought I was saying NO, intelligent, athletic, socially adept and beautiful don't go to BYU. I am sure your daughter isn't the only one there either.

My idea for a lottery wouldn't be, "everyone gets a shot". There would be a minimum academic requirement, but not where it is now.

Speaking of daughters, I have three friends who have daughter whom they and I consider extremely, intelligent, socially adept, athletic and beautiful who didn't get into BYU.

They were not slouches. Graduated from seminary, had above a B average and ended up doing very well. All married in the Temple. Two have pretty nice careers and the other is doing well being a stay at home Mom.

One of them used to donate nice chunks to BYU every year but his wife won't let him anymore.

All three of them has the same attitude toward BYU. Fathers are kinda funny when they think their daughter is dissed.

Maybe this and the lower age thing is God's way of telling them they need to go on missions.

I know how they feel. Our football son was turned down by Bronco and company so my wife won't let me donate to the BYU athletic department any more.

Tell your wife it is also the "real" reason I didn't donate last year.

Hah! I was a nerd *and* a jock. I had the fun combination of chess and computer clubs and wrestling team on my college admission papers.

I am going to drop out of this point counter point now. I don't want to end up offending either of you.

I had a bit of nerd in me too. I played the sports and as recently as last week was referred to as one of the, "jocks" by a divorcee I ran into who was two years behind me at my high school. I of course was offended by the characterization citing my participation in the madrigal choir, jazz band, school newspaper, and the computer club.

Between my penchant for the extra-curricular and a rather full social calendar I was not an ideal student.

I was mainly enjoying making fun of your lottery idea. And (heaven help me) I can't ever pass up a chance to mock byu71.

For the record, I married a hot (and smart!) UVU coed.

BL one of the reasons you're a favorite is you remind me of my dad. He was also an engineer. In spite of your mockery of my lottery idea you are appreciated because you keep us all honest.

Whoa, the dude likes them young. Was it weird for you kids to have graduated HS at the same time as their new mom?

For the life of me I don't understand the enjoyment people get from mocking an old man barely hanging on to life.

Do all of you hate the fact I will be getting my Social Security and you won't.
