In the rare instances when 2 QBs are both capable and ready then effective rotation is possible. ND doesn't have a full blowng "2 QB system" but Tommy Rees has come in and played a critical role at decisive moments for ND this year - he has had significant stat lines against Michigan, Purdue, Stanford, BYU and Pitt - and at some of those points Golston was good to go.

I agree that a 2 QB system is never ideal - and I think the odds are typically against it succeeding. And I think that a system of 2 equal co-starting QBs with similar skill sets is a recipe for disaster. But I think when you have 2 QBs with differing and complimentary skill sets then a 2 QB rotation can be more effective than exclusively playing one QB or the other.
you cite a great example that I would say is an exception and far from creating a trend. There's a reason why coaches avoid it.

Knock it off. This board has enough problems without a dose of middle-age lechery.

Yes but with his OSDS Bronco knows better than the world.

I almost made an addendum to that comment because I thought someone would make a comment like this. But I figured people would know what I was going for so I left it alone.

Stanford he played because Golson took a helmet to the head.
BYU Golson out due to injury.
Pitt he played a couple of series and was yanked.
Purdue/Michigan were early season games no way he plays at this point.

Point is this, it's not a 2 QB system or anything even close. Rees sucks and can play well in short periods of time. Golson has sucked at times this year because he's a Freshman.

If we can learn anything from the ND situation it's that Bronco/Doman f'ed up BYUs QB situation 3 years ago and should have always had a starter (Heaps) and a reliever (Nelson) to come in only for short stints.

Agreed. I wasn't commenting on Heaps/Nelson/Lark or BYU.

            .
He led key scoring drives against both Michigan and Purdue as a coach's decision when Golson was fine. At this point Golson is cemented at the go-to guy and there is nothing that resembles a 2 QB system. But if you're yanking your starter at critical moments and putting in another guy for entire drives (not just situational relief) then there's some variation of a 2 QB thing happening. But nothing like the FUBAR situation Brandonhall created w/ Nelson and Heaps.

            • Another notable 2 QB success that I didn't see mentioned - Leak and Tebow (national champions).

That wasn't much of a 2 QB system. Leak was the guy. Tebow was a change of pace QB.

                • Leak/Tebow was about as much of a 2QB system as Nelson/Hill to start the year this year. IOW, it wasn't.
