    Yep.

Springville and Salem Hills argued for the "vacate the win" option but the appeals board said that it wasn't an option in the state bylaws.

That's rife with problems. And weird.

      • Geez. What a mess. Now the Herriman coach is ballistic because they will have to face East in the first round of the playoffs. He said that if you forfeit the games, you shouldn't be eligible for the playoffs. If you let them go the playoffs, they should go in as the #1 seed or you cause a ripple effect that impacts lots of teams unfairly. That's a good point.

Maybe everybody needs a big reminder...it is just a game.

for that coach it's more than a game, it's his livelihood.

UHSAA really screwed the pooch with this one.

Totally agree. So the teams that got hurt here are springville, herriman, and salem hills, all of whom did nothing wrong. Way to set the standard, UHSAA.

Sure, but it still is just a game. He's not gonna get fired for losing in the playoffs to east.

Maybe I'm not the best person to comment on this. I had to end the season for a star athlete and I was so worried about it I ended up calling one of the most respected doctors in my mind, a D1 team doc. He said to me, "the coach, parents, and athletic director might forget this, but remember this is just a game". That is now my attitude when approaching sports injuries. This situation is like Taysom Hill's injury. It sucks, comes from a bad decision, it affects people's jobs, and it is still just a game.

No, he won't get fired, but he might have gotten a raise, or at least be in a position to ask for a raise if he had won against another team. Or he could have used it to rally boosters and raise money for the program, something very important for a fledgling school like Herriman (how long have they existed and have they ever made the playoffs?). At the very least he can claim that winning a game or two in the playoffs puts his team in a position to be better in the future.

I could go on, but there are numerous reasons why the Herriman coach (and others) could be pissed with the actions of the UHSAA.

That said, the most frustrating thing about this situation is that the violations were not in the least bit egregious, just technical errors, they were self reported, and the players in question had zero impact in the games they played in. All this fuss for nothing. I'd rather the UHSAA turned a blind eye.

Isn't it likely that Herriman will have to beat them at some point anyways?

No, it gets worse. At least in Region 8 (Timpview, Springville, Salem Hills), there was a consistent application of the rules. In the case of East, they didn't want to keep them from the playoffs so they decided that rather than forfeiting all of the games in which ineligible players played, they would forfeit just enough games that they could still go to the playoffs. So how do they decide which to forfeit and which not to forfeit? Totally arbitrary because they are just making things up at this point. So yesterday the Cyprus coach was walking out to the practice field to get his team ready for the playoffs when he was informed that their loss to East was one of the games that would not be forfeited, therefore Cyprus is out of the playoffs. Ouch. Try explaining that to the players.

Due to the second region game self-reported by Timpview yesterday, they dropped from first seed to third seed in region. So they get to open the playoffs on the road at defending state champ, Logan. Tough test for Timpview, but I bet Logan isn't happy by starting out with the first- or second-best team in 4A this year when they should be playing a creampuff in the first round.

Sure, but Herriman has a good team this year and had a good shot at making a deep run in the playoffs.

                              • This is high school football, for crying out loud. When I was in high school if I had been kept out of the state championship meet I would have been devastated. In retrospect, it was just something fun to do to pass the time compared to what I do now (remember, unlike most on here I was a D1 athlete).

What we need are parents that will act their part as well as coaches. Teach the kids life lessons. Filling out forms for college is important. Not lying on your resume is important. Honestly report your income. What we don't need are parents throwing a stink about an amateur high school organization's decision and how poorly it was carried out.
