Wow typical Utah. I guess those freaking carpet baggers will make a statue to him someday just to make themselves famous - and claim him as their own. There is something about those potato(e) furrows that just make men outa boys! Here is to this fine young man returning back to Idaho and hiding in God's country until the finest state in the unions sends it best raised crop, her younguns, out to be the savor of the world!Originally posted by MarkGrace View Post

I'm choosing to mostly ignore your fatuity here and instead overwhelm you with so much data that you'll maybe, just maybe, realize that you have reams to read on this subject before you can contribute meaningfully to any conversation on this topic.

Interesting side note from this story is that, upon hearing that he was committing to Utah, Bronco texted (I hate that word in its various tenses, can't we come up with something else?) him and then got on the phone with him and gave him the pitch and convinced him to stick with BYU. This goes to show that despite what some like to think, Bronco does indeed recruit kids and recruit them hard. He doesn't just hope kids will recruit BYU.

Based on past interactions like this, I was expecting Bronco to get on the phone and tell him that he'd pulled his scholarship. Doesn't Bronco expect these kids to stop taking trips after they've committed? Not advocating any particular approach, I just remember hearing that before.Originally posted by Jacob View PostInteresting side note from this story is that, upon hearing that he was committing to Utah, Bronco texted (I hate that word in its various tenses, can't we come up with something else?) him and then got on the phone with him and gave him the pitch and convinced him to stick with BYU. We love to talk on things we don't know about.

I think Bronco does as well as he can given BYU's limitations. This incident demonstrates both BYU's strengths and weaknesses wrt recruiting. Bronco's competitive advantage is environment. Here a kid from a divorced home has an LDS dad who wants him in the BYU environment enough that it overpowers the dad's loyalty to Whit, his former coach as the dad played for Whit at ISU in the late 80's-early 90's. The dad is a diehard Ute fan but is pushing the kid to BYU. That is good for BYU. However, the reality is that if environment is your competitive advantage one cannot be real surprised if kids are not as driven as the kids at schools where the competitive advantage is "to be the best of the best of the best." Peoples said that Utah's NFL kids impress him more than BYU's but he wants the BYU atmosphere. If atmosphere is more important to him than the NFL, he is not likely to make the NFL. The atmosphere giveth, and the atmosphere taketh away.Originally posted by Jacob View PostInteresting side note from this story is that, upon hearing that he was committing to Utah, Bronco texted (I hate that word in its various tenses, can't we come up with something else?) him and then got on the phone with him and gave him the pitch and convinced him to stick with BYU. Saying that I think Bronco does well with kids in face to face recruiting but his program branding might alienate some kids or give them pre-conceived notions that are difficult for Bronco to overcome. Regardless, I never believed he did not try his best or that kids had to recruit him or whatever it was the stringpulling wankers were whining about.Do Your Damnedest In An Ostentatious Manner All The Time!

Its all on a case-by-case basis, I'm sure. But past interactions also show, I think, that he tries hard to recruit kids even while they are visiting other schools and wavering. Different story if he is down to his last couple of scholarships for the year or has reason to suspect the kid is a big-time flake.Originally posted by falafel View PostBased on past interactions like this, I was expecting Bronco to get on the phone and tell him that he'd pulled his scholarship. I hope once the kid is there a while he can truly embrace the atmoshpere and not end up transferring.Originally posted by Goatnapper'96 View PostI think Bronco does as well as he can given BYU's limitations. the other part of this story is Gurney's completely unbiased slam at Utah, that was posted on his D-News blog before he quickly took it down realizing that no one had confirmed he was committed to Utah. Yes, the same Gurney who went to Utah practices in 2003 and left very unimpressed with Urban Meyer as Utah's new head coach.
At least Brandon G. is providing a little drama during the slow season. It’s been well-noted that Utah often offers prospects following BYU during the recruiting process, but it’s hardly alone with this practice. BYU fans term this as a “lazy” and even a “dirty” practice, while Ute fans regard it as just another part of being a rival program.
Lazy and dirty pool by Whittingham? It’s my opinion that until a recruit sends in that national letter of intent everyone is fair game in recruiting wars between rivals.
