You do realize Holt and Wilson were both elite recruits? If they are still in the program I consider that lately. Richard Wilson chose Byu over miami, lsu and stanford. Holt played in the US army game and had his choice of schools.

Also Devin mahina was a 4 star tight end. Kyle van noy was also a 4 stsr tight end and was recruited as a TE by several schools.

    • I agree with CJ; they're still on the roster, so I consider that recent. That being said, a guy like Mahina committed five or six years ago. I think we still have elite talent. What we've been missing is elite production post-Pitta/George. I'm hopeful some of the coaching and position turnover will have an impact in that regard.

I've never been that impressed with Mahina. I know he had an injury. It just seems like we've had a real dropoff since Pitta/George/Harline and the guys in years previous to that like Coats.

The last year we had Anae we seemed to struggle to have anyone define themselves from the rest. Since that time, Holt has moved to play line iirc, and Wilson hasn't been real stellar either. I never thought KVN was going to play offense at BYU, I always thought he'd play defense.

I thought Friel was alright. I thought with how crummy Nelson was most of the year, he'd be an outlet a bit more, but he had a lot of drops and Nelson didn't throw to him a ton either.

And I guess I'd always thought we'd have someone step up and be the next great guy but that hasn't seemed to be the case.

I feel like they may have had some decent recruits there, but have moved guys here and there and so an area that's been good for us previously has been weaker the last few years.

        • The collective number of injuries we've had at TE the last 3 years has been nothing short of amazing. The talent is there, the health and the scheme and the talent at QB hasn't.

            • I cringed whenever Riley threw to Friel last year. The pass was always high and short and Friel would reach back and tip the pass in the air. I'm excited to have Anae back if only to see the TE drag play in the end zone as well as to see the TEs line up big and block more.
"Discipleship is not a spectator sport. We cannot expect to experience the blessing of faith by standing inactive on the sidelines any more than we can experience the benefits of health by sitting on a sofa watching sporting events on television and giving advice to the athletes. And yet for some, “spectator discipleship” is a preferred if not primary way of worshipping." -Pres. Uchtdorf

                Yikes. Too many bad memories.
                Give 'em Hell, Cougars!!!

For all this His anger is not turned away, but His hand is stretched out still.

Not long ago an obituary appeared in the Salt Lake Tribune that said the recently departed had "died doing what he enjoyed most—watching BYU lose."
