He was not a great cover corner. He was a great safety/LB pretending to be a corner. He had a great nose for the ball and for making devastating hits. He was a great athlete. Claiborne was better as a shut down corner last year and everybody knew it. Marginal impact at best I think, but I will poll some friends.
This is my thought, as well. Good player, not a huge impact to lose him. LSU goes 4 quality guys deep at every defensive position. Lose one, plug in the next one.

    • I agreed with TD and Niku, but am a little skeptical of a RS freshman stepping in and completely filling the shoes. They may miss him, but it won't cost them a game.

My only caveat to this is that I think in many cases the sheer athleticism of people LSU brings in allows a defensive lapse or two. No doubt an RS freshman will have some growing pains but the rest of the defense is solid and in college you can get by with shoddy or inadequate technique if you are a freak of nature. LSU has a team full of freaks of nature.

And even if the RS freshman that's now in line to start isn't a freak of nature, LSU still has an ungodly front 7 in a run-heavy conference.

Bingo. It's the same reason why nobody's freaking out about Mettenberger or whatever the hell his name is: he's the starting QB for LSU. We're more interested in how many running backs we will destroy people with.

            • I have to agree with those who say the impact in terms of wins and losses will be minimal. The real story is Honey Badger as an individual. This is a guy who had the world at his feet, had every opportunity he could ever want life in terms of taking care of himself, was a key member of the #1 team in the country and his stupid decision has cost him so much of that. Sad, sad, story.

              • While we may not agree on whether the LSU football team will miss Mathieu; its pretty clear the retailers down there will.

On Saturday, the helmets the Hokies will wear for the 2012 White Effect game against Austin Peay on Sept. 8 were unveiled. It’s an all-white design festooned with … turkey feet.

What does that do to the Huskies, if anything?

                          • Has this been posted before? New rule for 2012 on helmets coming off:

Loss of Helmet During Play. If a player loses his helmet (other than as the result of a foul by the opponent, like a facemask), it will be treated like an injury. The player must leave the game and is not allowed to participate for the next play. Current injury timeout rules guard against using this rule to gain an advantage from stopping the clock. Additionally, if a player loses his helmet, he must not continue to participate in play to protect him from injury. Data collected during the 2011 season indicated that helmets came off of players more than two times per game.

BYU had better get its helmet problems fixed ASAP. Last year it seemed that helmets came off on every other play.

The helmets aren't the problem. The problem is that it has become vogue for players to wear their chinstraps looser, loose enough that they can remove the helmet without unbuckling their chinstrap. We discussed this trend in our high school meetings at length. Since I'm not reffing this year I'm not sure if any measures have been put in place to deal with the problem.

Same rule added for high school this year, btw.
