Not with this particular kid, but I know his HS coach, and I could find out if you would like me to.

What I do know is some details about BYU's recruiting of several players over the last 5 years(one currently being recruited), and this story fits the M.O. of their experience as well.

    1. You're LDS? Walk-on as you are not good enough for a scholly.
    2. Receive offer from other schools? Get offer.
    3. Use religion as a pressure point to get a commitment early in process
    4. Question religious devotion and testimony if you are leaning away from BYU.

    Rinse and repeat.

I do agree with Creekster and Flystripper that it is not a big deal. Persuasion is manipulation at its core. BYU should use whatever leverage that they can with potential recruits. Just don't get your panties in a twist if it rubs someone wrong and they call BYU out for it.

Do you have direct knowledge of how Crowton distributed his assistants in recruiting? IOW, do you have direct knowledge that Bronco was not a recruiter for this kid(either as initial or primary)?

That doesn't seem like he would have the best info. IOW, until the kid comes out and says "this is precisely what I was told by this coach at BYU," I'm not willing to make assumptions as to what was said and by who.

Regardless, I'm sure religion is used in recruiting at BYU. Everyone has acknowledged that, and BYU would be foolish if it weren't using its unique characteristics in recruiting LDS athletes. Whether the pitch is a "hard sell" or not seems less than clear and more than likely varies on a case by case basis.

One last point - while I don't have any reason to dispute what you've observed with athletes being recruited by BYU, I think there are plenty of other BYU players who received offers very early in the process, many before other schools were interested. So I wouldn't go so far as to say your observation is a complete picture of recruiting M.O.

HS coaches are often very tied in on how their players are recruited. I think that it is a high probablity that Aspers told his coach about his recruitment by BYU, Oregon, and any other schools that were after him. It is not like Bonneville is Mater Dei. Aspers was quite likely the only D-1 prospect from that school.

Plus, this is what he did say:

Then they called me back, and visited my high school the next day, and basically told me I’d be a bad Mormon if I didn’t go to BYU. I was like, “Jeez, great, that really makes me want to come!”
Based on that do you think he viewed BYU's approach in a positive light?

Several players do get offers up front. Typically the top targets. I am not critizing BYU for their approach. Their approach is theirs. I couldn't care less what they do. You however seem to bristle at the suggestion that BYU's coaches use religion as a negative recruiting tactic. Why is that?

Oh, I'm sure his coach was in the loop. I'm just not sure I'm willing to take his coach's comments as fact 8 years after Asper was recruited (he was a 2003 recruit). Who know's how detailed the info was he received from Asper, whether Asper relayed conversations verbatim, etc. IOW, I'm simply pointing out that he is not the ideal witness in this case. Asper, of course, would be much better.

Yes, I read that. It is very vague. That's what started this whole thread on fire in the first place. Clearly Apser did not appreciate BYU's approach, whatever it actually was. But that's the issue - there's no clear evidence of what that approach was. Asper's comment that BYU told him he was a bad mormon if he went to BYU seems unlikely to be accurate (Roger Reid notwithstanding) and strikes me as Asper's interpretation of BYU's pitch. We have no idea whether that is a fair interpretation, however.

If BYU coaches use religion as a negative recruiting tactic (whatever that means), I would probably be annoyed. I don't think I bristle at the suggestion. I think I bristle at the unsupported assumptions. (whether those assumptions are actually supported is one thing - so far I haven't read anything in this thread that supports them, however.)

Sombody took what I said and ran with it. I did't intend to judge either way, just thought it was a rather open attack on BYU stemming from an innocuous question.

Hating BYU doesn't make you an anti-Mormon, it just means you are more likely to be an on air SLC sports radio personality.

I have offerred support for the assumptions. You don't seem like you want to listen. So we stand at an impasse.

Well, I should take a step back. I see your support, and it is persuasive. But in the absence of direct evidence, I'm just not sure it merits the conclusion that this is the way Asper was recruited.
